Overview:
My research specialises in the study of the biology of beta cell loss in type 1 diabetes and the clinical impact of persistent beta cell function. I am PI of a study of extremely early onset type 1 diabetes (EXE T1D) diagnosed under 1 year that tries to learn why infants can present so young with autoimmunity. I developed a cheap, simple method to assess genetic risk in type 1 diabetes – a T1D genetic risk score (T1D GRS). This is used as a diagnostic test to differentiate type 1, type 2 and monogenic diabetes, and for prediction.
