CEDARS 2025 will take place 3 March - 28 April 2025.
Make your mark on our Research Culture by completing the CEDARS Survey
The Culture, Employment and Development in Academic Research Survey (CEDARS) asks researchers to share their thoughts, experiences and opinions about life as a researcher and the research culture at the University of Exeter. This is your opportunity to get your voice heard and to shape institutional policy and practice for the future.
CEDARS was developed in 2019 by sector working groups, it replaces the long-running Careers in Research Online Survey (CROS) and Principal Investigators & Research Leaders Survey (PIRLS).
CEDARS integrates questions from the CROS and PIRLS surveys with new questions reflecting the Principles of the revised Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers, incorporating the environment, culture, professional development and employment of research staff and the experiences of their managers.

The University of Exeter ran the survey for the first time in 2020, results of which are available on the MI Hub. The analysis of the results feed into Faculty and University action plans.
The survey is open to:
- Anyone who undertakes research (ECRs, all the way up to Professor)
- Those who manage researchers (PIs, PGR supervisors/ pastoral tutors)
- Research technicians
Please note: If you are a PGR, please do not complete this survey, instead please complete the Postgraduate Research Experience Survey (PRES).
