Training for staff who support PGRs

A number of training opportunities are available to staff who currently support, or will soon be supporting, PGR students:

  • PGR supervision: A workshop and associated online module that explores the way in which supervisors can enhance their supervisory practice by taking a more mindful and student-centred approach that is tailored to each PGR’s individual needs.
  • PGR pastoral tutoring: A workshop and associated online module that explores what is expected of PGR pastoral tutors and how their support fits alongside that of academics in the supervisory team.
  • PGR examinations: A workshop and associated online module that focuses on how academics can prepare both themselves and their students for a successful viva.

Staff who are new to the relevant activity should complete the online module, then follow up by attending a face-to-face session. Staff who have experience in supervision or examining at other universities may be required only to complete the online module. Training requirements are detailed in the TQA Manual. The introductory online modules are available through the EduExe Toolkit on SharePoint, and face-to-face sessions are bookable through iTrent.

Colleges are responsible for providing developmental support / ‘refresher’ activities at least every two years, and all staff are strongly encouraged to participate in these when they are available. Bespoke support / advice sessions can also be requested at any time by contacting the Educator Development team.
