Mustafa Aziz is an associate professor in Applied Electromagnetism and the education lead for the Electronic Engineering programmes in the Engineering department.  He has more than twenty years of experience in magnetism and magnetic materials, applied to model and study dynamic phenomena in magnetic nanostructures and metamaterials for the development of future high-speed, low-power magnetic data storage and computing technologies, and high-frequency electromagnetic materials and devices. 

 

In parallel, Prof Aziz has been equally working on phase-change materials for two decades to design and engineer novel high-speed, low power solid-state and photonic non-volatile memories and non-conventional, reconfigurable computing devices.  His research focuses on multi-physics modelling by combining the reaction kinetics of phase-change materials with electromagnetic and electro-thermal interactions to design and evaluate practicable devices.

 

Prof Aziz established strong links and continues to work with industry through consultancy and UKRI funding by applying his knowledge and expertise to design and engineer novel electromagnetic devices and instrumentation to solve real-world problems.  Examples include developing a high-sensitivity electromagnetic inspection tool for real-time monitoring of defects and anomalies in oil and gas pipes for the oil and gas well services industry, identifying and correcting signal drop-outs in commercial digital magnetic tape systems, and the design of compact actuators for wearable health technologies.

 

Prof Aziz has more than two decades of experience in teaching Electronic Engineering subjects in Higher Education, as module leader and project supervisor, at the various stages of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.  He has been the Education Lead for the BEng/MEng Electronic Engineering programmes for 15 years in Exeter, leading three successful IET accreditations, established inter-departmental undergraduate programmes, and secured funding over the years for state-of-the art teaching equipment and software.  He is also a long member of the IET and a volunteer.
