Environment and Sustainability Institute

Travels in Transdisciplinarity

Thursday 26 January 2023 (3 - 5pm)

Dr Ben Phillips and Dr Sarah Crowley
with reflections from Professors Kevin Gaston, Steve Hinchliffe, Robbie McDonald and Juliet Osborne

Chair and opening comments from Professor Caitlin DeSilvey, ESI Associate Director for Transdisciplinary Research

The practice of working across disciplinary boundaries is core to the ESI vision, and over the last decade scholars in the Institute have developed a range of creative ways of producing knowledge together. At one end of the spectrum of collaboration is transdisciplinary research, which involves researchers crafting new methods and approaches at the intersection of established disciplines. In this event, we heard about the journeys of two early career researchers who have used the ESI as a springboard for their own transdisciplinary research practice, beginning their journeys as PhD students and continuing through their careers as researchers and lecturers in the university. This panel event provided a platform for them to reflect on their experiences, in dialogue with their PhD supervisors and members of the audience, and to celebrate the ESI’s contribution to advancing integrated strategies for effective environmental research.

This event was held at the Environment and Sustainability Institute, University of Exeter on Penryn Campus.  It was a hybrid event and participants outside the ESI joined us on MS Teams.

Video recording of the event on 26 January, followed by Q&A

We are proud to be celebrating the ESI’s first decade of successful operation and are holding a series of events to mark #esi10 throughout this academic year.
