Environment and Sustainability Institute

Working together

Working in collaboration with diverse stakeholders to address sustainability challenges through research, innovation, and community engagement, is at the heart of what we do at ESI.

Key aspects include:

  • Transdisciplinary Collaboration: Researchers from diverse fields such as ecology, economics, social sciences, and engineering come together to tackle complex environmental issues. This approach enables comprehensive understanding and innovative solutions.
  • Industry Engagement: The ESI collaborates with businesses to develop sustainable practices and technologies, to help business meet the challenges they face, for example in reaching net nature positivity. These partnerships often involve joint research projects, knowledge exchange, and the development of environmentally responsible products or services.
  • Government Collaboration: The institute works closely with government agencies and policymakers to inform environmental policy and decision-making. By providing evidence-based research, the ESI contributes to the development of effective environmental regulations and strategies.
  • Community Involvement: Partnerships with local communities are essential for understanding local environmental challenges and fostering community-led initiatives for sustainability. The ESI engages with communities through outreach programs, participatory research projects, and educational initiatives.

Whilst much of the ESI’s research is global in relevance, there is a strong focus on place-based sustainability research. This video provides an overview of some of our work cocreated with regional partners.

We work closely with colleagues in the Exeter Innovation team to build and support ongoing collaborations with businesses and other partner organisations. Exeter Innovation helps external partners find solutions to their challenges, drive innovation, and access new skills and top talent.
