Exeter Defence, Security and Resilience Network

Exeter Defence, Security and Resilience Network

Exeter Defence, Security and Resilience brings together over 200 University of Exeter academics from across all disciplines, University Institutes and Research Centres. This network brings together academics from metamaterials, human performance, CBRN and AI through to strategy, Homeland security and policing working at the cutting edge of defence and security research. Through our many strategic partnerships with the major primes and government bodies, Exeter Defence, Security and Resilience academics are working on the science of our global future.

The network leverages its extensive range of partnerships with other UK and global Universities and organisations to bring even more horsepower to our research, consultancy and education provision in this increasingly challenging and contested environment. For example, the Defence Data Research Centre, a partnership with the Universities of Liverpool and Surrey, Digital Catapult and the Defence AI Centre, brings a multi-disciplinary approach to improve data use in the defence community. There is an increasing focus on collaboration in the AUKUS space.

The network offers a portal into our expanding research portfolio, providing existing customers and potential partners a one-stop hub. This extensive portfolio covers contemporary issues ranging from smart cities to quantum computing to the conduct of modern warfare and incel motivation. The networks research themes provide a simple framework for exploring the huge variety of expertise held within the network. Reflecting current trends and customer demand, the network is expanding its work in cyber and AI, particularly at the convergence of the scientific and technological, social science, legal and ethical aspects.

Exeter’s Defence, Security and Resilience academics have an established track record of working with external stakeholders including local, regional and central government partners, businesses and international governments, partners and collaborators. Current partners include Devon and Cornwall Police Forces, the College of Policing, the Home Office, the Ministry of Defence, the Armed Forces, the Ministry of Justice, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, BAE Systems and Thales. The network will continue to strengthen our relationships with current and future strategic partners.
