Ecology and Conservation

We have fundamental expertise across the breadth of the discipline in behavioural, population, community and evolutionary ecology. We engage with pressing conservation issues including fisheries, the impacts of pollution, invasive species and climate change.

Work also looks at solutions including marine protected areas, bycatch mitigation, sustainable aquaculture and renewable energy. We have particular strengths in marine megavertebrate ecology, migratory species and coral reef systems.

Researchers combine laboratory, desk and modelling studies with field work carried out globally in marine ecosystems from the tropics to the poles.

Much of our work is carried out in conjunction with governments, NGOs and communities at home and abroad.
