Exeter Urban

The Exeter Urban Research Network aims to be a leading force in addressing the complexities of the contemporary urban landscape as the world enters what has been termed a new "urban age.” In cities both large and small across the globe, urban issues from housing and transportation to healthcare and economic growth, remain at the heart of today’s defining global challenges.

Our network aims to support and develop the innovative, collaborative research necessary to respond to these challenges. By bridging gaps in Exeter's research profile and fostering connections between disciplines and faculties, we aim to catalyse innovative thinking and impactful partnerships that can address pressing urban challenges. Leveraging Exeter's unique regional location and interdisciplinary strengths, we seek to contribute distinctively to the urban research landscape. Our network builds on successful initiatives like the GW4 Urban Humanities community, integrating humanities approaches into dialogue with various disciplines across the university. Through these efforts, we strive to establish Exeter as a hub for multi-disciplinary urban research.

Key areas of our research include:

  • The global urban agenda
  • Technology, digital urbanism, and the future city
  • Informal and peripheral urbanisms
  • Transportation and mobilities
  • Urban health
  • The Urban South West
