The Global Systems Institute is applying Earth system science to generating networked solutions. Our aim is to work with others to secure a flourishing future for humanity as an integral part of a life-sustaining Earth system. We are uniting a trans-disciplinary group of researchers, educators and partners to look beyond single ‘environmental’ issues to a truly systemic view of coupled global changes in the human social and economic sphere and the biosphere.

The Institute for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (IDSAI) provides a hub for data-intensive science and artificial intelligence (AI) activity within the University and the wider region. They are a truly interdisciplinary research institute with data scientists, mathematicians, and computer specialists across many of our Colleges, Research Institutes, and Departments.

The Land, Environment, Economics and Policy Institute (LEEP) sits within the Economics Department at the University of Exeter Business School.
LEEP aims to develop knowledge and understanding to inform governments, businesses and communities about how land and the environment are managed and used; the policies that affect this; the impact upon people, and how policy should be better designed, appraised and evaluated.

Fair and Inclusive Society
The new Defence Data Research Centre is part of the UK Government’s newly released Defence AI Strategy and the newly established Defence AI Centre. The DDRC comprises a consortium led by the University of Exeter, supported by the Universities of Liverpool and Surrey, the Digital Catapult and the Defence AI Centre. Over three years, the consortium will bring together a strong combination of talent to advance the technical and cultural capabilities at the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) in their use of data science and AI.

The Centre for Social Mobility’s research spans a number of areas including university contextual admissions and support for disadvantaged students, guidance on the evaluation of outreach activities, and the synthesis and dissemination of evidence to help teachers improve outcomes of disadvantaged pupils. Our work focuses on the impact of practices and policies, using quantitative, qualitative, and action research methods.

LSI merges research in biology and medicine with ground-breaking physical sciences technologies and powerful mathematical modelling capabilities. They tackle major challenges in the fields of RNA & proteins, viruses and microbes, stem cells & development, and neuroscience.

Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) is accelerating in both bacteria and fungi, as well as in parasitic diseases such as malaria, rendering antibiotics less effective and threatening over a century of advancements in modern medicine. Evidence Synthesis & Modelling for Health Improvement (ESMI) is a vibrant and multidisciplinary research group which specialises in the synthesis of research evidence for health policy and practice. The research of our teams spans systematic reviews and mathematical modelling to estimate the effectiveness, cost-effectiveness, implementation and acceptability of treatments, health services and public health programmes.
