Infrastructure
ADA Investment has funded significant redevelopment on Streatham campus, providing resources for students, academics, professional services and researchers.
Students
Lovelace
The Lovelace computer laboratory is in Innovation Centre 2. It seats 120 students and is architect designed to ensure lines of sight and audio are optimised wherever you are in the room.
The desks are arranged in banks of 6 with a display monitor on each bank. The display can show either centralised teaching material, or share group work from each area.
Monitors on each desk fold down to encourage engagement and build group work skills when screens are not in use- this also means the spaces can be used as computer laboratories or standard seminar rooms.
This localised set up is much more pleasant and engaging for all students, but particularly benefits neurodiverse groups who may find the sensory aspects of a louder, more cluttered traditional laboratory set up overwhelming.
Babbage
The Babbage lab is in Innovation Centre 1. It seats 60 and benefits from the same design principles as the larger Lovelace space. In addition to the lab there is also a breakout space next door.
This room means students can experience both ‘chalk and talk’ teaching of theoretical aspects, and try out these fundamentals in the lab in the same session. The break out room benefits from wraparound whiteboards and bench seating to encourage collaborative working.
Social areas
The social space in the building has been completely redesigned to ensure that students are encouraged to congregate in appropriate areas and socialise before and after their lectures.
Flexi Space
By moving the reception desk and re-purposing the post room we have been able to create a bookable flexi space. This room can be used for seminars, student societies, conferences or business engagement activities.
Researchers
Robotics Lab
In Innovation Centre 1 (A1f) ADA funding has supported the development and equipment of an enhanced Robotics lab. This facility can be used across the AI in Healthcare and Human Centered AI research groups to benefit the research interests of a range of key departmental academics.
The lab includes three robotic arms, 33 Swarm robots, a robotic dog, thermal imaging equipment and VR capabilities.
ADA Workspace
Workspace has been developed opposite the Lovelace Lab. This area offers staff a break out room for less formal meetings, small booths for Teams calls and a blend of both private and open workspaces. This is supported by the Kadence booking system to ensure staff can depend on having the space they need,
The Head of Computer Science has based in this space to ensure staff make good use of the new areas and lessons learnt about open work spaces can be built into plans for the later redevelopment of Innovation Centre 1.
Professional Services
Agile Workspace
The workspaces have been redesigned to support modern hybrid working practices. Each area is supported by the Kadence booking system to ensure staff can rely on having a suitable workspace with their colleagues on their anchor days.
Each area now benefits from a stand up desk, a private telephone room, a kitchenette and lockers
Board Room
The building has now gained two additional centrally bookable meeting spaces for professional services staff
Facilities
The newly designed building benefits from enhanced facilities including:
Reception seating
We have included more dedicated seating adjacent to reception to provide corporate visitors an appropriate space to wait.
Active Travel Provision
The building has expanded cycle storage, better equipped showers and a drying room for wet clothing.
Informal Meeting Space
The cafe area has been expanded and more informal booth meeting space has been included
