Public Engagement

Public Engagement with Research at Exeter

Public Engagement is a very important element of research at the University of Exeter.

We believe we must engage with the world outside of the university to tackle fundamental issues facing humankind and to ensure our research connects with people’s lives, and is meaningful and relevant to society.

Through our commitments to Public Engagement with Research, we will work towards creating a sustainable, healthy and socially just future.

How we engage

Why we engage

Public engagement is an essential role and the responsibility of modern research in higher education, which itself benefits from including people from outside the research community in a process of shared learning. This may be described in a variety of ways: co-production, collaboration or participant and public involvement.

It can include working with participants in a project, patients, carers and service users, as well as people from the wider society, such as public policymakers, community groups, third sector organisations and businesses. Involving individuals with a stake in the project who are not researchers can enhance the quality of the research and help it to bring about positive change for society and the economy.

At Exeter, people in our local area, across the country and around the world are making connections with our researchers every day. We are working hard to reach a place in which everyone’s voice is heard and everyone can benefit from the world-changing research that happens here. Learn more about Public Engagement here.
