Pay bands

Professors at the University of Exeter are leaders within the academic community, and are expected to make exceptional contributions to the delivery of the University’s strategy and mission. For Education and Research professors, this will normally include outstanding research activity and commitment to teaching; for Education and Scholarship professors, it will normally include effective strategic leadership, within and beyond the University.

Professors will demonstrate and promote the University’s values and standards in all their activity. They will operate in a collegial manner within the academic community, and will be expected to demonstrate leadership within and beyond the University.

Internal promotion to professorial level will be guided by ‘The Exeter Academic’.

Professorial bands

To determine professorial pay in a transparent and equitable manner, the University references a three-band pay structure. This structure is designed to recognise and reward continuing scholarly achievements, the exercise of academic leadership, and contributions to the life, work and sustainability of the University community.

The levels of contribution outlined below are cumulative: each band builds on the performance stipulated in the previous band(s).

‌Band 1

Band 1 is the normal entry level for individuals who have been promoted internally or recruited externally to their first Chair (in accordance with the University’s existing systems and promotion/recruitment criteria). It is sufficiently broad to allow progression within the band as professors develop their careers.

Band 1 professors will have a national and international reputation for excellence (in research and/or education and scholarship) in their relevant discipline. They will make demonstrable contributions, at an appropriately high level, to the University’s strategy and mission.
