Guidance on starting salaries
The University will continue to advertise Professorial vacancies with an unspecified, ‘competitive’ salary.
For first chair appointments, including internal promotion to Personal Chair, the starting salary will normally be within Band 1.
Established chairs, recruited externally, may be appointed within Band 1 or Band 2, subject to an assessment of experience and achievement against the band criteria, and exceptionally within Band 3.
In all cases, both the band and the starting salary within that band should be discussed and agreed between the PVC/Dean of the College, the Provost and the Director of HR, taking account of the description of professorial band profiles and statement of ‘indicative activities and achievement’.
In addition, the following factors may be considered:
- Perceived worth of the preferred candidate, taking into account the individual's current salary.
- Comparability within the University – and particularly the college and discipline – with existing professors, especially those of similar experience and achievements.
- Available funding.
In appropriate cases, the University may also pay a market supplement or other enhancement to remuneration in accordance with its Policy on .
HR advisors will be expected to monitor, and advise upon as appropriate, gender relativities within the University and individual colleges.
