Level 2 - Mental Health and Suicide Awareness: Supporting Students

About this course:

This course builds upon the level 1 online training for mental health and suicide safety, expanding on the See, Say and Signpost approaches when supporting students in distress.

During the L2 session the following information will be covered:.

- An overview of mental health and mental ill health, along with the effects mental health challenges can have on a student.

- Effective communication techniques for supporting students in distress.

- Recognizing signs that a student may be experiencing suicidal thoughts and questions to ask if you are concerned about their safety.

- Guidance on available signposting options for both staff and the student.

- Information on the support available for staff who assist students.

This course involves presentation and teaching from the facilitators as well as participatory activities such group discussions, case studies and practice conversations.

Learning outcomes:

1.

Enhance knowledge and confidence in identifying and supporting students facing mental health challenges and crises.

2.

Build skills in having supportive conversations, particularly when a student may be experiencing suicidal thoughts.

3.

Improve understanding of the next steps and available signposting routes for student support.

4.

Raise Awareness of the importance of self-care when supporting students at risk.

5.

Foster a community-driven approach to mental health and suicide awareness across the University of Exeter.

Who should attend this course:

Staff who have a front facing role in supporting students, or who support staff who have a student facing role This course follows on from the online Level 1 training course available on Learn Upon, therefore participants will ideally have completed this first.

Facilitators: The training will be presented by two members of the Wellbeing Training Team.

The team members are: Jo Blakely, Rachel Bragg, Kathy O?Connor, Emma Early, Nat Waller and Karen Eells.
