About this course:

This is our level 3 training within the Mental Health and Suicide Awareness (supporting students) colleague training programme.

This is a 2 day, Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) England course delivered by Wellbeing staff who are accredited MHFA England instructor members.

MHFA England is the leading provider of Mental Health First Aid Training (MHFA) with over 15 years of experience.

Upon completion of the course you will be accredited as a MHFA England MHFAider.

As part of the Mental health and suicide awareness training the University is developing a network of mental health first aiders with the focus being on supporting students.

When you finish the course we hope that you will choose to become a MHFAider within the University.

The course and MHFAider role will promote equity and understanding about mental health from different perspectives.

It will also help to build supportive communities within the University and encourage self care, giving tools to look after our own mental health.

These include supporting a staff member who is concerned that a student is experiencing poor mental health and distress, and supporting the student directly.

The course will additionally consider ongoing support for you in your role as a MHFAider.

This includes the Communities of Practice which are a Wellbeing services Hosted Network and MHFA England ongoing learning.

IMPORTANT:.

Attendees will need to have support from their line manager before they can take on the training and the role of MHFAider.

This is an intensive course and attendees will need to commit to attend for the full 2 days (9 am to 5 pm).

The course will be taught by a mix of PowerPoint teaching, small and large group discussions, case studies, role play and practice conversations.

Attendees will be encouraged to be as actively involved as possible to maximise learning.

Learning outcomes:

By the end of the session you will have:.

Gained knowledge and skills to spot signs that a student may be experiencing poor mental health, distress and/or crisis.

Confidence to start a conversation and signpost to appropriate support.

Confidence to talk about suicide and respond in a safe supportive manner.

Increased knowledge about support options for students both inside the University and external support options.

An understanding of ongoing support for you in your role as a MHFAider.

Who should attend this course:

This course is available to staff who:.

- have a student facing role, or staff who line manage colleagues in a student facing role - are in a role where support/guidance/management may be provided to colleagues.

- have approval from their line manager that they can attend the course and take on the role if they choose to.

- have completed level 1 (and ideally Level 2) of the Mental health and suicide safety training - supporting students.
