Academic Development Conversations (PDR, Promotions and 1:1s)

Course overview:

A great PDR is all to do with the quality of the conversation, which is the focus of this workshop.

We will explore the purpose of PDRs, examine your role as a reviewer, and provide an introduction to key skills as enablers for effective developmental conversations, such as:.

- Coaching techniques.

- Goal/objective setting.

- Giving and receiving feedback.

- Providing career guidance to education and research staff at all stages of their career.

It also considers the role of the PDR within the wider performance management and promotion contexts.

Local processes and practices vary across Departments and Faculties.

We therefore ask you to seek clarification of these processes at a local level (Via Line Manager or Head of department).

This course is mandatory for all staff who will conduct PDRs and is most effective if completed a few months before PDRs are planned.

Learning outcomes:

As a result of attending this course you will be able to:.

- Understand the purpose of PDRs.

- Get the most out of a PDRs and the alignment to the Exeter Academic promotions process.

- Understand the role of a Reviewer and the key skills required.

- Adopt a coaching style and deploy the GROW model - Goals, Reality, Options, Way-forward.

Who should attend this course:

Academic Leaders from across our Education and Research job families who will conduct PDR reviews with other academic staff.

This is a mandatory course.
