Researcher Development : Visual Literacy - How to Read and Construct Images
Description | Theme: Education and Research Category: Education and Research This session will be DELIVERED VIRTUALLY - joining instructions will be provided beforehand. This activity is for Research active staff and would be particularly useful to Early Career Researchers.
About this course: We carry cameras with us everywhere, and nearly 5 billion photos are taken daily. But how many of those photos are well constructed and tell a great story? Visual literacy is a skill that helps us to not only interpret imagery in our everyday environment, but to help us build our own images and effectively communicate ideas and narratives to others. This session will introduce you to the basics of how images are structured, drawing on historical artworks and contemporary advertising, and then offer practical guidance on strengthening the communication impact of your own images.
Learning outcomes: As a result of attending this course, you will be able to:. - share what visual literacy is - basic principles of how images can be made and understood/received. - to increase visual literacy in life generally. - to highlight how better visual literacy (ie aesthetics and semiotics) improves research and research communications. - to increase visual literacy to support better research and better research communications.
Who should attend this course: This activity is for Research active staff and would be particularly useful to Early Career Researchers or indeed anyone interested in using visuals/imagery to communicate ideas. Anyone entering the Images of Research competition. If you have accessibility requirements, please contact researcherdevelopment@exeter.ac.uk in advance to discuss further.
