Course overview:

A holistic approach to fire safety is taken for each building and the Person in Charge (PiC) is appointed as the key contact for that building.

They are the designated competent person providing a co-ordinated approach on behalf of all the responsible persons operating within the building.

The Deputy Person in Charge (DPiC) role is to support the PiC in the practical tasks involved in their role and to provide resilience in times of absence.

PiC - The PiC is the first point of contact for fire safety management within their premises.

They are appointed to carry out the managerial actions required in law and in accordance with the University's Fire Safety Management Standard.

This includes co-operation and co-ordination between all occupants and contractors, enabling the management actions raised within the fire risk assessment (such as drawing up the evacuation plan and fire service information pack), minor incident investigation and recruiting and managing the premise's fire safety team.

Deputy PiC - Assists the PiC by carrying out the practical actions required.

This includes the means of escape checks, drills, ensuring signage is up to date, circulating information, assisting with site inductions, maintain information within the premise's Sharepoint, Logbook, etc.

Staff carrying out both roles should have the ability to cover each other during times of absence.

Training, support and advice is provided by the Fire Safety Team.

The time taken to carry out the roles is not expected to exceed five hours per month and is allocated from within the post holders contracted hours.

Delegates should also attend the Health and Safety: Fire Marshal & Evacuation Officer course.

Learning outcomes:

By the end of the session you will be able to:.

- Describe your fire safety role and the duties of the PiC and Deputy PiC.

- Explain the roles of the Fire Marshals and Evacuation Officers.

- Clarify the role of Estate Patrol.

- Complete and file the fire safety records.

- Complete the fire safety managerial actions required.

Audience:

Employees of the University of Exeter who have been appointed by their line managers to carry out the role of PiC or Deputy PiC.

Presenter(s):

A suitably trained member of the Fire Safety Team.

Pre-work Requisites:

Delegates should also attend the Health and Safety: Fire Marshal & Evacuation Officer course.
