Education and Research This activity is for Research active staff and would be particularly useful to Early Career Researchers at the University of Exeter.

This session will be DELIVERED VIRTUALLY - joining instructions will be provided beforehand.

About this course:

This interactive workshop will guide participants through filling in a planning worksheet for public engagement.

Topics covered will include:.

- Reasons you might want to engage the public with your research.

- Types of outputs, outcomes, and impacts achieved from engaging the public.

- How to decide who should be involved.

- Ways to reach the publics you want to engage with.

- How your research fits into a wider picture.

- Benefits to researchers from engaging with publics.

- Benefits to publics from engaging with research.

- Planning for evaluation of the engagement.

Participants will be expected to bring an idea to use as a basis for filling in their worksheet during the training.

The worksheet will be used as a learning tool.

Participants should not expect to have a full engagement plan in place by the end of the workshop.

Learning outcomes:

As a result of attending this course, you will be able to:.

- Define public engagement with research (PER).

- Be aware of the variety of types of engagement that fall under the umbrella of PER.

- Understand why someone might incorporate public engagement into their research process and how one might do it.

Who should attend this course:

The course is specifically designed Research active staff and would be particularly useful to Early Career Researchers and PGRs wanting to learn more about public engagement.

Presenter(s):

Dreolin Fleischer, PhD, Engaged Research Manager, Exeter Innovation (Formerly IIB).

As Engaged Research Manager, Dreolin is responsible for providing strategic and operational leadership for all aspects of Public Engagement with Research (PER) across the University.

Dreolin brings to this role more than 20 years of experience in programme evaluation and applied research working within the areas of education, health, arts and culture, and policing.

View recording of introductory presentation about public engagement (to be circulated).

Review the worksheet (to be circulated) and come prepared with an idea/example to work through the worksheet with at the training.
