Description

Theme:

Education and Research

Category:

Education and Research This session will be DELIVERED IN-PERSON - instructions will be provided beforehand.

This activity is for Research active staff and would be particularly useful to Early Career Researchers.

About this course:

NVivo is a software program used for qualitative and mixed-methods research, to support the organisation and analysis of unstructured text, audio, video, and image data (eg commonly used for projects which involve analysing interviews, focus groups, in-depth qualitative surveys etc).

This hands-on workshop will introduce you to this software, and how to use it for coding during qualitative analysis, for methods such as thematic analysis, content analysis, grounded theory, and so on.

.

Learning outcomes:

As a result of attending this course, you will be able to:.

- Understand what NVivo is and the purposes it can be used for.

- Find your way around the software.

- Add codes to your data.

- Organise your codes.

- Add analytical memos.

- Be signposted to further resources.

- Ask questions at the end of class about coding your own qualitative data sets.

Who should attend this course:

This activity is for Research active staff and would be particularly useful to Early Career Researchers.

This is an introductory course, suitable for those who have not used NVivo previously but would like to know how to code text and other forms of data, to support their qualitative analysis.

The teaching content has been developed primarily with Windows users in mind, but you would be welcome to attend with a Mac device if that is what you usually use.

Presenter(s):

Dr Helen Foster-Collins.

Helen is a lecturer in the Department of Psychology, who contributes to the teaching of qualitative research methods and supervises qualitative student projects for undergraduate, masters and clinical doctorate programmes.

Before the course:

Please bring along your own laptop to this session with NVivo pre-installed.

There are variations in this software, depending on your computer, most notably between Windows and Mac computers.

My session is aimed at Windows users as I do not have access to a Mac but I can assist you in class with whichever device you have.

IMPORTANT: Participants are welcome to also bring examples of their own data to practice coding during this session, but please ensure that this is fully anonymised first.

Please note also, the interactive nature of this session means that it will not be recorded or live-streamed.

This allows me to support participants in class with hands-on examples of using the software.

Learning provider:

MAKE YOUR MARK - Research staff peer to peer development - This session is being delivered as part of a new pilot scheme of research staff peer to peer development titled `Make your Mark'.

The facilitator is kindly giving up their time voluntarily and willingly sharing their expertise to help the wider researcher community.

This course is administered by Researcher Development; please contact researcherdevelopment@exeter.ac.uk for more details.

If you register for any of our sessions, it is expected that you will attend.
