Flexible Combined Honours
The Flexible Combined Honours takes over from the Modular Degree. It offers the same opportunity to develop an alternative mode of study for students by allowing as much flexibility as possible in the design of their degree, while also offering first year entry and an enhanced range of subjects.
The programme can provide a truly interdisciplinary degree (leading to a named degree title not otherwise available), tailored to meet the needs and career ambitions of our students. It also offers opportunities to study in mainland Europe, and is available at both the Exeter and Cornwall campuses.
First year entry
Modules can be combined from two subject areas. Currently the following subject areas are available for first year entry to students taking a three-year degree at Exeter
Archaeology; Biosciences: molecular and cellular biology; Business and Management; Economics; Education Studies and Childhood and Youth Studies; English; Geography; History; International Relations; Law; Mathematics; Philosophy; Politics; Psychology; Sociology; Theology.
It may also be possible to study a foreign language, timetable permitting.
Second year entry
In addition to the subjects available for first year entry, the following subjects can be taken by students transferring to the Flexible Combined Honours scheme in their second year:
Classics and Ancient History, Drama, Modern Languages, Medieval Studies and Renaissance Studies.
The IT modules offered by the Creative Media and IT (CMIT) teaching unit (see ) can also be taken from Year 2. Depending on the number of credits taken, degree titles can include the words 'and Information Technology' or 'with Information Technology'.
The degree can also be combined with Study Abroad under the SOCRATES-ERASMUS Scheme (see Study Abroad) or with a year abroad under the guidance of the School of Modern Languages
There is the opportunity to undertake 'independent study' with individual supervision in a subject of the applicant's choice, such as a research project, an internship or a dissertation.
Cornwall Campus
The Flexible Combined Honours scheme in Cornwall allows for the study of either two or three subjects from the following list:
Cornish Studies; English; Geography; History; Law; Leadership Studies*; Politics
* Leadership Studies may only be taken in a three subject combination
120 credits must be taken in each year. If two subjects are studied, then 60 credits are taken each year from each component. If three subjects are chosen, 30 credits must be taken from each of the three chosen subjects, and the remaining 30 credits can be taken from any subject. It may also be possible (subject to timetabling and pre-requisites) to take a subject from another discipline area that is taught in Cornwall
Entry to Year 2 of the Flexible Combined Honours in Cornwall may also be possible subject to certain pre-requisites.
Where an existing subject combination already exists in a current programme (e.g., History and Politics), applicants must apply for that programme and not the Flexible Combined Honours programme.
It should be noted that the study of Psychology as part of the Flexible Combined Honours programme does not lead to professional accreditation to the British Psychological Society. Similarly, the study of Law as part of the programme does not necessarily lead to professional accreditation to the Law Society.
