Professors and Readers |
| 15.1 |
The Council may, at any time, after consideration of the recommendation of the Senate, establish new Professorial Chairs. When a Professorial Chair becomes vacant the Council may, on the recommendation of the Senate, either fill the vacancy or leave the vacancy unfilled. |

Appointment to a Professorial Chair shall be made by the Council on the recommendation of a Joint Committee of the Council and the Senate consisting of the Chairman of Council, the Vice-Chancellor, and an equal number of (a) those who, being members of the Council at the date of appointment, are appointed by the Council and (b) those who, being members of the academic staff, are appointed by the Senate, provided that persons who are not members of the appointing bodies do not constitute more than one-third of the number of the Joint Committee. The Joint Committee shall be assisted by two external advisers, appointed by the Council on the recommendation of the Senate. The advisers may be invited to take part in the interviewing of candidates but shall not be members of the Joint Committee. The Joint Committee shall report its recommendations both to the Council and to the Senate. |

The Council may also after consideration of the recommendation of a Joint Committee of the Senate and Council appoint a member of the Academic Staff to a Personal Chair in recognition of outstanding distinction in his/her subject and who the Committee is convinced commands respect for his/her academic leadership both within and without the University. The title of a Personal Chair shall lapse on the resignation, retirement, or death of the holder. |

Appointment to a Personal Chair shall be made by the Council on the recommendation of a Committee of Council and Senate consisting of the Vice-Chancellor as Chair, the Chair and one other lay member of the Council, at least three members appointed by the Senate from among the Deputy Vice-Chancellors and Deans and no more than six professors appointed by the Senate, the total membership not to exceed twelve in number. |

The title of Reader shall normally be conferred on existing members of the Academic Staff who have achieved distinction in their subject and who are expected to exercise academic leadership. This shall not preclude the Council from instituting, on the recommendation of the Senate, ad hoc Readerships in selected subjects. |

The procedure for promotion to Readerships shall follow that laid down for Personal Chairs. |
