A - General Regulations for Students
1 | General Principle |
1.1 | All students, registered and interrupted, are required to abide by and submit to these General Regulations and to other Regulations and Procedures approved and amended by the University from time to time relating to conduct and attendance while they remain students of the University. |
2 | Attendance |
2.1 | All students must be in attendance as appropriate to their programme of study by the first day of term and must remain in attendance until the last day of term. Students following online programmes must engage with their studies throughout the programme. |
2.2 | No student may be absent from classes or other assigned academic activities except for illness without prior permission from the College Pro-Vice Chancellor concerned. |
2.3 | Students who wish to withdraw from the University during term will normally be required to give one week's notice to the Faculty concerned. |
2.4 | A student who is prevented by illness from attending classes must complete, sign and send to the College a certificate. After seven successive days of illness the student must ensure that a certificate signed by a medical practitioner or other supporting evidence is submitted.[1] |
2.5 | Students must present themselves punctually for University examinations in accordance with instructions given to them. A student who is prevented by illness from attending any examination or part of any examination must ensure that a certificate signed by a medical practitioner or other supporting evidence is sent to the College concerned. |
3 | Residence |
3.1 |
Students may live either in University halls of residence or in University self-catering accommodation, if available, or in accommodation of their own. Separate Regulations applicable to University residences may be found in section B. Regulations applicable to Falmouth Exeter Plus' accomodation can be found here: http://www.fxplus.ac.uk/accommodation |
4 | Registration |
4.1 | Each year, every student, whether full-time of part-time, and whether following a programme for an award or for any other reason, must complete University registration procedures. |
4.2 | Students who without good reason fail to register at the appointed time will be required to pay the designated Late Fee charges. |
4.3 | Students may not change their programme of study or vary the date for sitting examinations without prior permission which should be sought from the Pro-Vice Chancellor(s) of College concerned and from the appropriate Admissions Office. |
4.4 | Any alteration in the particulars given on the Registration Form, and especially in respect of home and term-time addresses, must be notified without delay to SID or, in the case of students on programmes based at the Cornwall Campus, to the info@Penryn and for students based at the Truro Campus Registry. Students following online programmes should notify exeterstudentsupport@online.exeter.ac.uk. |
4.5 | Students whose payments to the University, in relation to academic related fees, are in arrears by more than one term are not permitted to continue on programmes or proceed to the dissertation stage unless a payment extension has been granted in writing by the Fees Office. Upon receipt of formal notice from the Director of Education and Student Experience and the Chief Financial Officer, a student can be required to withdraw from all programmes immediately. Where there are arrears at the end of an academic year a student's existing registration will be deemed cancelled, unless an extension in writing has been granted by the Student Fees Controller. |
5 | General Conduct |
5.1 |
Students are expected to conform to a reasonable standard of behaviour and may be subject to disciplinary action by the University where they fail to do so including where such failure bring the name of the University into disrepute. The University strives towards a community in which individuals accept their obligations and responsibilities to enable all to live, learn and research in a peaceful and supportive environment, promoting wellbeing, equality and fairness. The community extends beyond the bounds of the University campus and is not necessarily limited to incidents on University related business or events, and may include for example incidents related to noise, social media and anti-social behaviour where this may impact on the wider community. |
5.2 | Where a breach of that standard of behaviour threatens the safety of other students and/or of staff or disrupts the learning experience of other students, a student may be required to withdraw from a specific class (or other learning activity, which may or may not be residential) with immediate effect by the member of academic staff responsible for that class. Any such requirement shall be reported without delay to the student's College Pro-Vice Chancellor who, after consultation with the member of staff concerned, shall meet the student (save in exceptional circumstances that prevent this from happening) to discuss, and attempt to resolve, the issue that led to the incident. The student may be accompanied at the meeting by a person who shall normally be a current member of the University. The College Pro-Vice Chancellor shall arrange for a record to be kept of the outcome of the meeting which will be made available to the student. |
5.3 | Following the meeting with the student, should the College Pro-Vice Chancellor consider that exclusion of the student from future classes (or other learning activities) be warranted, or that some other penalty should be applied, the case must be referred to the Director of Education and Student Experience, who will consider it under the Health Wellbeing and Support for Study procedure on the Grounds of Health or Safety or under the Disciplinary Procedure, as deemed appropriate. Temporary exclusion ahead of any proceedings under those Procedures must be approved by the Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive. |
5.4 | The Disciplinary Procedure of the University is set out as in section E below. |
5.5 |
Communications with students will be via their University of Exeter email accounts only, therefore students are expected to check their University of Exeter email accounts on a daily basis so that important communications are read. Failing to read emails will not be considered an acceptable explanation for failure to respond to communications, unless there is evidence of valid mitigating circumstances eg attendance on field trips with no access to emails. |
5.6 | Students who are subject to criminal proceedings during their time of registration must notify the university via studentconductmail@exeter.ac.uk. Students may be subject to the University's Disciplinary procedures and failure to disclose criminal proceedings could be deemed a disciplinary offence in itself. |
5.7 | The University of Exeter and Students' Guild/FXU place great importance on its relationship with the local community in which students live and socialise. The University encourages students to engage and participate in community life, and in doing so to develop an ethos of personal and social responsibility. Whilst resident in the local community the University expects students to behave in a way that is respectful and courteous of their neighbours and other members of their community and not to engage in anti-social behaviour that causes distress or harm to others. This principle also applies to the students who are resident in University accommodation, where we would expect a similar level of responsibility and reasonable behaviour. Regulations relating to the expectations of residents' behaviour in accommodation, and consequences of failings to meet these expectations, are explained in the Accommodation contract, Residents' Handbook and Residence Regulations. |
5.8 | The University encourages students to have an active social life, however, when behaviour falls below the University's expectations, being under the influence of alcohol is no excuse. |
5.9 |
Students who are representing the Athletic Union and University (eg playing/spectating/socialising) at a fixture/varsity/ BUCS or social event, whether on campus or in the local community are expected to behave in accordance with the Athletic Union's Code of Conduct and Social Event Policy. Where the behaviour falls below the expectations set out in these documents, students may be subject to University Disciplinary procedures. Separate arrangements may apply to University of Exeter students participating with FXU. |
5.10 | The University has a zero tolerance approach to drugs within its accommodation and on its campuses. Students found in possession and/or smoking/taking drugs will be subject to the University disciplinary procedures. The University will co-operate fully in any police investigation into the use, supply or provision of controlled drugs or substance abuse. |
5.11 | Students who are found to have impersonated and/or falsified records for personal gain may be subject to the University disciplinary procedures. |
5.12 | The University expects that students should not be cited in multiple or repeated offences and would consider such cases with the upmost seriousness. |
5.13 | As members of the University, students are expected to treat others with dignity and respect. Students should familiarise themselves with the University's dignity and respect website, including what is harassment, and the University's guides on online activities including the use of email, social media, the University's social media guidance, as well as the good practice guide social media. |
5.14 |
Where investigating an alleged breach of University regulations, the Authorised Officer will request any relevant information which may include CCTV/body worn camera footage from Estate Patrol. Where the alleged breach has occurred in Guild run premises, the University will work in partnership with the Guild and share data which may include CCTV footage. |
6 | Identification |
6.1 | Students are required to identify themselves by surrendering their University card when requested to do so by an authorised member of the University or Students' Guild/FXU staff or by authorised staff on anyUniversity of Exeter campuses. Students who fail to provide ID may be subject to the University's Disciplinary procedures. |
7 | Academic and Research Conduct |
7.1 | Students are not permitted to seek any unfair academic advantage. Contravention of this Regulation will be treated under the procedures for handling cases of suspected misconduct in University assessments, cases of any alleged academic or research misconduct are handled under the relevant procedures. For all Taught Students this is Chapter 12 of the Assessment Progression and Awarding Handbook, Academic Conduct and Practice. For all Research Students this is Chapter 13 of the Postgraduate Research Handbook, Research Misconduct. |
8 | Academic Progress |
8.1 |
The University expects all students to make regular and satisfactory progress in their studies. A student whose work is reported by a College Pro-Vice Chancellor as unsatisfactory, or who fails an examination, may be required to repeat the year or to withdraw from the University. |
8.2 | Students are required to complete any vacation work which may be assigned to them. |
9 | Academic Dress |

12.2 | All parking applications are to be submitted to: carparkingenquiries@exeter.ac.uk |
12.3 | Separate rules and arrangements for the use of motor vehicles apply to students using the Cornwall Campuses. Applications to park there should be submitted to Reception at the Campuses; acceptance of a permit implies acceptance of the rules concerning the use of motor vehicles on the Campuses. |
13 | Arrangements for Social Events |
13.1 | All social events requiring the reservation of social areas of public rooms in Devonshire House or Cornwall House, whether organised by private individuals, or Officers of the Guild and its affiliated societies, must be cleared by the Guild's Events Co-ordinator and approved by the Director of Campus Services (or nominee). |
13.2 | In addition to clearance and approval as above, social events (including those held by College societies) which require the reservation of the Great Hall, Forum, and rooms in teaching buildings must also be cleared through the University's Conference Office. Separate arrangements may apply to the Cornwall Campuses. |
13.3 | In the case of social events for which a bar extension is requested, permission for the bar operator to apply to the magistrates for any extension will normally be granted automatically when the event is approved. Such extensions will normally be allowed until half an hour before the end of an event.
