Ordinances

23 The Faculties
23.1 There shall be two Faculties: the Faculty of Taught Programmes headed by the Academic Dean for Students, and the Faculty of Graduate Research headed by the Dean of Postgraduate Research, for each of which there shall be a Board with powers as set out in Ordinance 26.
23.2 The Deans of the Faculties shall be appointed by the Council on the recommendation of the Senate.  The Vice-Chancellor shall, following an open and transparent process which may include internal and external advertisement and interview, make a nomination to Senate for onward transmission to Council.
23.2.1 Deans shall be appointed for a period of three years.
23.2.2 Deans are eligible for re-appointment.
23.2.3 If the Office of Dean should fall empty before the expiry of the agreed period of tenure, a locum appointment may be made by the Vice Chancellor until the procedures referred to in paragraph 23.2 can be operated.
23.3 The Board of the Faculty of Taught Programmes shall consist of:
  (a) The Academic Dean for Students.
  (b) The Associate Academic Dean for Students.
  (c) The Associate Dean of Education from each College.
  (d) Four  members from each College nominated by its Pro Vice-Chancellor & Executive Dean, to include the Associate Dean Education (or equivalent), the Education Business Partner and two academic members to represent as far as possible, non-Streatham provision, undergraduate programmes, post graduate programmes, language and lab based subjects.
  (e) Students’ Guild Vice President for Education and Students’ Union President Exeter (the Falmouth and Exeter Students' Union) to represent as far as possible the views of the student body of the University and to provide knowledge and expertise of Guild/ the Falmouth and Exeter Students' Union’s priorities and current student initiatives.
  (f) Other members co-opted as appropriate to provide knowledge and expertise from their respective directorate, such that the total membership of the Board shall not exceed thirty-eight.
  (g) Three members of the Senate in order to provide a cross-institution perspective and to provide assurance to Senate of appropriate governance and conduct in relation to academic governance, quality and rigour, and that matters delegated by the Senate are dealt with accordingly.
23.4  The Board of the Faculty of Graduate Research shall be incorporated into the Management Group of the Doctoral College, through which it shall exercise its powers.  The Management Group of the Doctoral College shall consist of:
  (a) The Dean of Postgraduate Research.
  (b) The Assistant Director (Research Environment & Doctoral College).
  (c) The Director of Postgraduate Research from each College.
  (d) The Research and Doctoral College Business Partner from each College.
  (e) a representative of the Students' Guild and a representative of the Falmouth and Exeter Students' Union’s to represent as far as possible the views of the student body of the University and to provide knowledge and expertise of Guild/ the Falmouth and Exeter Students' Union’s priorities and current student initiatives.

23.5 The Board of the Faculty of Taught Programmes shall exercise its powers as defined in Ordinance 26 in respect of all taught programmes of study leading to undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, diplomas, certificates and other awards delivered by a College or other academic unit of the University.
23.6 The Management Group of the Doctoral College incorporating the Board of the Faculty of Graduate Research shall exercise its powers as defined in Ordinance 26 in respect of all programmes of research delivered by a College or other academic unit of the University, and in respect of Higher Doctorates.
