Regulations for Academic and Official Dress

1 OFFICIAL DRESS
1.1 The Chancellor’s Robe shall be of black silk with MA style sleeves and embroidery of gold lace, worn with a cap adorned with a gold tassel and gold edging.
1.2 The Pro-Chancellor’s robe shall be of black silk with MA style sleeves and embroidery of gold lace, worn with a cap adorned with a gold tassel and gold edging.
1.3 The Vice-Chancellor’s robe shall be of black silk with MA style sleeves and embroidery of gold lace, worn with a cap adorned with a gold tassel and gold edging.
2 ACADEMIC DRESS FOR AWARDS OF THE UNIVERSITY
2.1 Robes of Graduates
 

Gowns are of the Cambridge pattern. Hoods are of the Cambridge “full” shape except the foundation degree which is of the CNAA/Aberdeen Shape. The black undress gowns of Higher Doctoral awards (DLitt, etc) are provided with Doctors’ lace around the sleeve openings and yoke. The black undress gowns of PhD, EdD and DClinPsych are of the Masters’ pattern with Doctors’ lace around the sleeve openings only.

2.2 Robes of Undergraduates
  Academic costume for undergraduates consists of a black stuff gown of the approved pattern, worn without an academic cap.
2.3 Hoods
  The University colour is dove grey.
2.4 Robes
  Foundation Degree: Black gown of the bachelor style.  Hood in dove grey cloth, unlined, edged with spectrum blue taffeta.  Bachelor’s Dress: Black gown. Hood in dove grey cloth unlined, edged with Spectrum blue taffeta. In the case of Bachelors of Philosophy, the hood is provided with a thin white cord sewn to the leading edge of the hood.
  Undergraduate Master’s (MChem, MEng, MMath, MPhys) Dress: Black postgraduate gown. Hood in dove grey unlined, edged with Spectrum blue taffeta with a thin gold cord sewn to the leading edge of the hood.
 

Postgraduate Master’s Dress: Black gown. Hood in dove grey fully lined in Spectrum blue taffeta.

 

Taught Doctorates (PhD, EdD, DClinPsych) Full Dress: Black gown, with Spectrum blue taffeta facings on the front of the gown only. Hood in dove grey cloth lined with scarlet.

  Higher Doctorates (DDiv, DEng, LLD, DLitt, DMus, DSc) Full Dress: Gown of scarlet cloth with wide sleeves and with Spectrum blue silk facings on the gowns and sleeves. Hood of scarlet cloth lined with dove grey and edged with Spectrum blue.
 

Graduands: Graduands should wear the dress of the degree they are about to receive.

 

Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) Dress: Black gown of the Bachelor’s style. The hood in dove grey cloth, partly lined in Spectrum blue taffeta.

2.5 Headgear
 

All Foundation degree, Bachelors, Postgraduate Certificate in Education and Masters wear the black academic square mortarboard with black tassel. Doctors in full dress wear the velvet bonnet with Spectrum blue chord. Women graduates and women members of the academic staff wear the appropriate headgear whenever the hood is worn. Men also wear the appropriate headgear except when being presented for a degree.

3 ACADEMIC DRESS FOR JOINT AWARDS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF EXETER AND THE UNIVERSITY OF PLYMOUTH
3.1 Robes of Undergraduates
  Academic costume for undergraduates consists of a black stuff gown of the approved pattern, worn without an academic cap.
3.2 Robes for Sub-Degree Diploma/Certificate
  Black Cambridge style Bachelor’s gown, with CNAA-style hood in black, lined with grey taffeta (Pantone 429), tipped with Spectrum blue and edged inside the cowl with terracotta (Pantone 158); black mortarboard with black tassel.
3.3 Robes for Bachelor of Science
  Black Cambridge Bachelor’s style gown, with black Cambridge full shape hood lined in grey, with adjacent edgings inside the cowl of blue and terracotta; black mortarboard with black tassel.
3.4 Robes for Bachelor of Medicine
  Black Cambridge Master’s style gown, with black Cambridge full shape hood lined in grey, with adjacent edgings inside the cowl of blue and terracotta; black mortarboard with black tassel.
3.5 Robes for Postgraduate Diploma/Certificate
  Black Cambridge Master’s style gown, with black Cambridge full shape hood lined in blue, with adjacent edgings inside the cowl of grey and terracotta; black mortarboard with black tassel.
3.6 Robes for Masters
  Black Cambridge Master’s style gown with outside facings of grey, with black Cambridge full shape hood lined in terracotta, with adjacent edgings inside the cowl of blue and grey; black mortarboard with black tassel.
3.7 Robes for Doctors
  Violet purple Oxford Doctors gown with facings and sleeves trimmed with grey, with purple Cambridge full shape hood lined in grey, with adjacent edgings inside the cowl of blue and terracotta; purple velvet Doctors bonnet with a grey cord and tassel.
