Delivered by our own press team these in-person 1 hour sessions are aimed at PGRs and early career researchers and will focus on promoting work to press and media. Sessions will cover what makes a news story, what elements journalists look for, and how to work with the press office. The session also touches on writing a press release, being interviewed and social media.

Online Workshop: maximising your online presence

Join expert trainer Alastair Banks for a workshop on the value of creating an impactful researcher presence online and maximising your digital footprint across different online platforms.

In this session he will outline the importance and benefits of developing your digital footprint and then lay out his six steps for improving your own. This is sure to be an actionable, inspiring and impactful session.

Alastair, an Exeter Alumnus, has been working with researchers, academics and tech transfer offices for the last ten years. He has worked with organisations including University of Cambridge, London Business School, LSE and The University of Chicago.

These workshops are open to all postgraduate researchers and academic colleagues.

Social Media Workshop (in-person)

In this workshop, led by consultant Anna Ford, we will address how researchers can most effectively use social media to communicate their research, reach new audiences and engage with others. We’ll also cover the current state of the ever-changing social media landscape, a run-through of the different platforms, tips to boost your posts’ engagement, and guidance on how to handle challenging interactions online.

Anna Ford specialises in research communications, and was the Head of Media at the University of Sussex, leading both the media relations and social media teams. Anna has also worked at the London School of Economics (leading media for its climate and environment institute) and with the University of California (leading the media campaign for UC’s hub of ocean science expertise at COP28). Before moving into higher education, Anna worked in government press offices for eight years.

Presentation Skills Training (in-person)

This practical workshop will help researchers pithily and punchily communicate their research. Participants are asked to come with a particular area of research in mind. Through the session, they will learn presentation skills and techniques so that they can compellingly and persuasively talk to audiences about their research and its impact.

The workshop will be led by Dan Ford, a presentation coach and videographer who works with universities including Sussex and Brighton. In a former life, Dan was both an actor and also an academic. Dan has coached dozens of researchers – including senior leaders and Vice-Chancellors - in speech-making and presenting. He has helped them prepare for graduation speeches, as well as how to communicate their research engagingly in person and on video.
