Research Services and Doctoral College (July 2017)

Strategic vision Research Services:

For an individual academic:

Local delivery of support to academics across the full research project life cycle, from horizon scanning, research development through to research project management and delivery (including financial post- aware management) to post- project development and reporting.

A single point of access/signposting to support and expertise from appropriate other Professional Services, in particular to IIB and Doctoral College.

For Colleges, Institutes and University management:

Joint strategic, policy and planning support to the University and Colleges to build and sustain an excellent research environment for our academics.

For staff in the Research Services family:

Improved training and development opportunities.

Strategic vision for the Doctoral College:

Through the reorganisation of the team to build robust, resilient and effective pillars of activity, the reshaped Doctoral College will deliver on the four strategic objectives agreed by the Doctoral College Strategic Board in 2015:

  • To support the improvement in the number and quality of applications and entrants for PGR students.
  • To create a sector leading experience for all PGRs and ECRs.
  • To provide expertise, co-ordination and support for securing and delivering DTP/CDT and other externally funded programmes and industry funded studentships and fellowships.
  • To ensure effective and resilient administration of all PGR administrative processes.

Benefits delivered:

  • New structures for Research Services and the Doctoral College will provide efficient, resilient and future-proof services able to support our academics and Colleges in improving external research income capture, and support the University's growth ambitions in relation to increased income and student numbers.
  • Research Services will provide a 'shared support service' to three Directorates (Research Services; Innovation, Impact and Business; and the Doctoral College) for strategy, policy, planning, information, systems, training and business operations. This will maximise efficiencies and ensure coordinated engagement with others, specifically Colleges.
