Gateway to Careers: Nature Networks

What is the Gateway to Careers: Nature Networks Programme?

If you’re passionate about supporting nature projects, seeking to make a difference and contribute towards positive change in society then look no further than jobs in Rewilding. The sector is expanding fast, and the learned skillset can be both broad and specific depending on the role. Rewilding is a key solution in the fight against climate breakdown, seeking to reinstate natural processes andmissing species, allowing them to shape landscapes and habitats.

Fully funded by the Univeristy of Exeter, Gateway to Careers: Nature Networks gives you the opportunity to develop the skills required for the Rewilding sector through an in-person and online learning environment.

Check out the Ambios website for more information about the organisation: https://www.ambios.net/

The programme comprises of 2 key elements, the UK residential course and the distance learning course work:

UK residentialfield course

A twoday residential on the Lower Sharpham Farm (Totnes, Devon) campsite taking place Friday 5th April – Sunday 7th April 2024.

Over the weekend you will camp with fellow University of Exeter students while exploring, in detail, how to use anoperate wildlife camera traps and how to begin or continue your personal journey with bird identification. Being on-site gives you the opportunity to hear and see a variety of wildlife with options to use bat detectors and moth traps. You’ll also hear from past Ambios trainees (UoExeter Alumni) about their journeys into employment, their top tips and experiences.

It'll be a productive and packed weekend where you’ll meet new friends and make new networks for the future while enhancing your practical skills and engaging with nature.

Distance learning course

A threeweek distance learning course taking place online between Monday 8th April to Monday 29th April 2024.

There are two distance learning courses to choose from and you can take 1 or both depending on your other time commitments going forward.  They run on the Ambios Virtual Learning Environment. You will take your wildlife camera and Bird ID sketch book home to practice and over the three weeks be guided through online learning materials that will build on and consolidate what you have learnt during the residential. You should expect to allow around 6 hours a week to follow the learning materials and complete the learning tasks but this can be done in your own time and at your own speed.

There will be 2 x 1 hour zoom sessions in the first week and 2 x 1 hour zoom sessions in the third which which you will attend. All Zoom meetings are recorded and placed on the Virtual Learning Environment as catch-up.

As recognition of the many aspects of their learning from the course, students can gain an e-badge from Ambios Ltd once they have completed the set tasks required by the course. This e-badge describes in detail what they have learnt and can be shared on professional networks and social media. Employers in our sector use these e-badges to verify claims of experience. They illustrate to employers the depth and breadth of the experiences gained from the course.
