Not a member of staff or a student?

If the format of the Sanctuary Service is the kind of worship you're looking for, but you're not a member of staff or a student, you may be interested in similar services on Sunday evenings at Exeter Cathedral (link opens in new window).

Sanctuary Service

When and where

Every Sunday during term time
7.00pm - 8.00pm
Mary Harris Memorial Chapel, Streatham Campus, Exeter.

Who this service is for

This service is open to all University of Exeter students and staff, and their partners and families.

Whether you're a regular churchgoer looking for something a bit different, or you've never been to church in your life we would love for you to join us.

About the service

Sanctuary is a relaxed and informal, eclectic service of contemplative worship.

The service is ecumenical, i.e. it uses liturgy and music from a variety of Christian traditions. As such, each week it is led by a different Chaplain from one of the following churches:

  • Anglican
  • Methodist
  • Baptist
  • United Reformed Church (URC)

Each week we'll creatively and thoughtfully explore a different theme chosen from a range of topics. You can see the themes for this term in the service plan.

Will there be a choir?

This service is non-choral. If you'd like to attend a choral service on Sunday, you may be interested in our Choral Eucharist service.

Holy Communion

Usually the services are non-Eucharistic (i.e there will be no Holy Communion), but around twice a term there will be a Eucharist as part of the service and this will be advertised in advance in the service plan.

There's no expectation to receive the Eucharist if you'd prefer not to, but if you would like to you are very welcome to do so.

Sunday 29th September: A Place at the Table

This will be an Iona Community communion service, emphasising the welcome Christ gives to his table.

At this service, we'll reflect on how coming to university is a time when we reflect on our identity and who we want to be.

As part of this, we’ll explore how identity can be shaped by community: as a Christian fellowship, we help each other to find our identity in Christ.
