In the faculty of Environment, Science and Economy we run courses specifically for postgraduate engineers and, for students on all science programmes in the faculty, we have a couse on academic writing for science. Please select the most appropriate for you and use the links to enrol.

Academic English for Postgraduate Engineers (CPENG) 

This course comprises 8 sessions (including an initial placement task) and supports and develops writing for academic and technical purposes. Topics covered include: 

  • Approaches to academic writing 
  • Effective and accurate use of sources 
  • Report writing 
  • Writing data analysis 
  • Paragraph and whole text connectivity  

There are two groups of this course, both covering the same material. Please choose the group most appropriate for your timetable: Mondays 16.35-18.00 7th October to 2nd December or Wednesday 16.35-18.00 9th October to 4th December. Signing up for one session will automatically sign you up for all subsequesnt sessions at that time.

English Language Skills Development for students on ALL Science programmes

Academic Writing for Science (AWSC) 

This course, which comprises 7 sessions, is suitable for students on all science programmes at the university and at all degree levels. Topics include: 

  • Written organisational skills 
  • Making effective use of sources 
  • Appropriate academic style 
  • Language skills for research reports and data commentary
