English language Skills Development at the faculty of Health and Life Sciences is delivered in two ways. We run a number of zero-credit modules for specific programmes in the faculty that most international students on those programmes will be automatically enrolled in. If you would like to participate, but you are not enrolled, please email insessional@exeter.ac.uk.
In addition to this, students on all science programmes are invited to join Academic Writing for Science by enrolling using the links at the bottom of the page.
English Language Skills Development for Specific Programmes
This course, which in term 2 comprises 5 sessions, is open to students on all Psychology programmes and at all levels of study. It is designed to aid in the development of accurate, effective, critical writing style. Content includes:
- Writing research proposals
- Effective paragraph organisation
- Analytical writing
All postgraduate students of Psychology will find this module on their timetable. If it does not appear on your timetable, and you would like to attend, please complete the from here.
There are two groups of this module:

In term 2 we run assignment specific workshops for undergraduate students of Sports and Health Science: Timetable TBC
Workshop 1: Writing Lab reports [supporting module ESS3707]: strategies and language to develop accuracy and relevancy in your writing for this assignment
Workshop 2: Dissertation Writing: Organisation and Literature Review: focus on accuracy of content and use of language to develop a critical approach.
Workshop 3: Dissertation Writing: Critical Discussion Section - effective critical written approaches.
These sessions will be taught by Jo Hughes.
NB: Dedicated one-to-one support for Sports and Health Science students is also available. They can be booked here
In term 2 there is 1 workshop designed specifically to meet the needs of students in this discipline.
Developing a Reflective Disposition: putting together written skills to produce clear, relevant reflective texts. All students at the Medical School are eligible to join this module. If it does not appear on your timetable, and you would like to attend, please complete this form.

Academic Writing for Science (AWSC)
This course, which comprises 7 sessions, is suitable for students on all science programmes at the university and at all degree levels. Topics include:
- Written organisational skills
- Making effective use of sources
- Appropriate academic style
- Language skills for research reports and data commentary
