Graduand dress code
As well as full academic dress, graduands are required to wear smart clothes on the day of the ceremony. We kindly request that you do not wear jeans or trainers. Please ensure you wear appropriate footwear for walking up and down hills and slopes.
Our robe-makers recommend clothing that accentuates the traditional gown. Suit jackets help to puff out the shoulders, giving the hood more security. Shirts with visible top buttons are recommended as well, as they attach to the hood via a loop, anchoring the hood and preventing it from slipping back.
Those with long hair may wish to bring hair grips to help secure their caps.
Guest dress code
Guests are advised to dress as if they are going to a formal occasion. We kindly request that guests do not wear large hats which may obstruct the view of other members of the congregation. We also ask that no large banners or balloons are brought into the ceremonies. Please note that Penryn campus is a balloon free space.
Robe hire, collection, and fees
You can hire or buy your academic robes from Graduation Attire online at: https://exeter.evess.co/ Please see the dates and deadlines page for opening dates and when a late fee will be introduced.
Streatham Campus
Robes can be collected on campus from the Terrace Restaurant in Devonshire House, (next to the Forum Building.)
You can collect your robes at the following times:
- 9am ceremony: Between 4pm and 6pm the evening before your ceremony, or from 7am on the day of your ceremony.
- 10am ceremony: From 7:30am on the day of your ceremony.
- 11.45am ceremony: From 9am the on the day of your ceremony.
- 2pm ceremony: From 10am on the day of your ceremony.
- 3pm ceremony: From 12pm on the day of your ceremony.
Penryn Campus
Robes can be collected on campus from the Exchange Courtyard building.
You can collect your robes at the following times:
- 10:00am ceremony: From 7:00am on the day of your ceremony or early collection night before 4-6pm
- 1.45pm ceremony: From 11.30am on the day of your ceremony.
- 2pm ceremony: From 12pm on the day of your ceremony.
- 3.45pm ceremony: From 12.30m on the day of your ceremony.
Please aim to arrive at least 1 hour before your ceremony to allow plenty of time for prior to the start of your ceremony.

How to wear your robe
Representatives from our robing supplier, Graduation Attire, will be on hand to help you when you collect your robe, however for those collecting in advance, there are also helpful video guides available to watch.
Robe return
If you have selected 1-day hire for your robe, please ensure you return your robes in the Terrace Restaurant, Devonshire House or the Exchange Courtyard (Penryn) before the times below:
Streatham Campus
- 9am Ceremony: Return robes by 6pm.
- 11.45am Ceremony: Return robes by 6pm.
- 3pm Ceremony: Return robes by 7pm.
Penryn Campus
- 10am, 1.45pm and 2pm: Return robes by 6pm.
- 3.45pm: Return robes by 7pm.
Five day hire
If you have selected 5-day hire, please send this back using the courier pre-paid returns bag provided at gown collections by the Graduation Attire team.
Late returns
We cannot assist with the late return of robes, please contact the robing company via their website here to arrange to return your gown in the post.
Please note: Please be aware that Graduation Attire is our recommended supplier of academic dress for these events. Graduands must wear academic dress which abides by the University of Exeter Academic Dress scheme. Those not in correct academic dress will not be permitted to cross the stage.
In absentia robe booking
You can still hire or buy your academic robes from Graduation Attire online.
Please see the dates and deadlines page for opening dates and when a late fee will be introduced.
To order your robes, you will need the following details:
- Your name and student number
- Your height (from head to floor)
- Your head circumference (measure 1 inch above your eyebrows)
- Your payment card details
If your details are not recognised by the Graduation Attire site, please contact SID.
