Interested in languages?

Would you like to try to learn a new one or continue to develop that one you had to put on hold?

Boost your employability and global profile by using up to 30 credits per year to study a second language alongside your degree programme on Penryn campus at no extra cost.

And if you like it and successfully complete a minimum of 60 credits in the same language by the end of your undergraduate studies, you will be able to choose to have these additional skills formally recognised on your degree title and officially graduate in BA/BSc in [insert your programme] with proficiency in the language you have studied.

All our language modules are taught in-person and on campus with a communicative approach. You get a minimum of three-contact hours per week and are assessed on your understanding of the target language as well as on your written production and conversational skills. Lots of opportunities are provided too for undergraduates to develop other transferable skills such as teamwork and intercultural communication.

We offer French and Spanish courses from Beginner to post A-Level, and Cornish and Mandarin Chinese modules from Beginner level only. Your previous language experience, if any, is always taken into consideration when you register in one of our optional modules, and your final entry levels are assigned accordingly.

Please note that if you are in the final year of your UG studies, languages can only be taken at an Intermediate or Advanced level.

These are the credit-bearing modules we are advertising for 2025/26:

“Part 1” modules are 15-credit courses running only in term one for those students who have not enough space for a longer course.

All these modules are subject to timetable availability and will only run if a minimum requirement for student numbers is met. There is a risk that a module you have applied for will not run as advertised. You will be informed in as timely a manner as possible should this be the case (although this may be at short notice) and if possible, we would look to run the module again at a later date.

We also work closely with Modern Languages colleagues on our other campuses. Find out more about our online non-credit bearing cross-campus language study options via the Language Centre webpages.

Interested in Work Placements?

Placement modules are designed to increase your overall competitiveness in the graduate job market. They are a fantastic way to source and secure valuable work experience opportunities as a core element of your degree programme and enable you to develop crucial employability skills and enhance your future job prospects.

Students who undertake placements generally have better graduate outcomes than those who do not undertake a placement. The benefit of gaining work experience through a module is that you have the support of the Placements team in securing your placement opportunity through 1:1 support, workshops and lectures designed to develop your job-hunting skills.

For more information on placement modules, please see the relevant module pages:
