New undergraduate students - Devon
Welcome to the Faculty of Environment, Science and Economy!
You can find induction information and useful links for your department below:
Congratulations on securing your place to study at the University of Exeter Business School! We will do everything we can to make your time with us both successful and enjoyable.
Your academic induction
Ahead of your arrival, please complete your online pre-arrival induction which will be available on Learn.Exeter; your welcome email will also include an invitation link. The induction is full of important information and advice about your studies and life as a student here. It also contains activities and forums so you can start to get to know other students even before you start your course.
Your programme may contain optional modules in the year ahead, and if so you will need to go to Online Module Selection (OMS) to choose them. We encourage you to explore this as early as possible.
Welcome Week (16th – 20th September) is an important and exciting start to your time at Exeter. You will learn more about your course, and meet key staff and other new students at programme-specific welcome events by the Business School. When you have your IT account, your on-campus induction sessions will appear in My Timetable, but you can also check details below. Your Programme Director may also have arranged additional events so please look for information in emails, your timetable and our pre-arrival induction.
Buddy-Up Scheme
You can also register now to be matched up with a current Business School student via our Undergraduate Buddy-Up Scheme. This is a great way to get friendly peer-led support through your first few weeks with us.

The Academic Welcome Fair is a chance for you to meet student support teams and academic societies and find out about opportunities and resources available to you while you study at Exeter. There is a Quiet Hour scheduled for the Academic Welcome Fair at 9:30-10:30 for students who would benefit from visiting without the crowds and accompanying noise. This will not show in your timetable, so if you would prefer to attend during this time, please remember to make a note of it.
Reading list
We don’t expect you to complete specific reading in advance for your course, though you are welcome to be reading widely.
Basic reading lists for each first-year module can be found in the module descriptors. All recommended reading should be available through the university library.
Access to IT equipment on campus
All the software you need to successfully complete your geography degree at Exeter will be available to you in our specialist computer labs in the Hatherly building, or from elsewhere on campus using the virtual desktop. However, we know that many students choose to purchase personal IT equipment such as a laptop before beginning their degree.
If you are buying a new computer for university:
If you are considering purchasing IT equipment it is recommended that you choose a Microsoft Windows laptop to ensure you get the best experience using the geography software that you will encounter. Not all of the Geography software will install successfully on a Mac.
Don’t worry if you already have a Mac and don’t want to get a new machine – you can still access all the software you need on our computers on campus or you can access most software through our virtual desktop. It may also be possible to install a Windows partition on your Mac using BootCamp. We have staff who can help you with this.
If you are purchasing new equipment, there is a really wide range of models to choose from. It’s your personal choice of what machine to get, but if you would like something that will allow you to use the majority of software you will encounter on this course, we would advise that you consider a machine with:
- At least 512GB - 1TB of storage
- At least 8GB of RAM
- Screen Resolution of no less than 1920 x 1080 pixels
- Intel i5 Processor
- A high-quality Graphics Card
Support with costs:
If you need financial support to help you with costs of IT equipment, you can read about what support might be available to you on our Success for All webpages.
As we mentioned above, don’t worry if you choose not to purchase a laptop – you can still use the computers on campus or the virtual desktop.
