Exam adjustments and Individual Learning Plans

Find out about:

Exam adjustments

Exam adjustments are changes  made to your exams or the place where you take your exam to support you to overcome barriers you may face as a result of a disability, neurodivergence or health condition.

They may include:

  • extra time
  • using a laptop
  • a specific type of room or location for the exam
  • support from a scribe
  • support from a reader

You may have had exam adjustments before at school, college or at another university. However, these adjustments do not automatically transfer to your study with us, so read on to find out more.

Please be aware that you will need to request these adjustments by the exam adjustments deadline.

If you have a strict religious observance which may coincide and/or interfere with your exams, please consider disclosing this to the Exams Team via the Religious Observance form. Please note that this form is not monitored, or received, by Wellbeing Services.

To set up exam adjustments as a current student, we will first ask you to complete an ILP Request Form. We will ask you to provide supporting evidence.

An advisor will then look to create an ILP, which may include exam adjustments and other support for your studies. An advisor will contact you if they have any questions. You can also contact the teams to request an appointment to discuss your disability and support options at any time. Please find more information about ILPs below.

Let us know as soon as possible if you think you need exam adjustments.

There are exam adjustment deadlines you need to meet to get any changes in place in time. If so, get in touch with us as soon as possible to discuss your support needs.

If you have already had an Individual Learning Plan created, which includes exam adjustments at the University, you do not need to set up exam adjustments again. However, if you want to review or update your existing ILP, you should make contact in good time before your next exams, and in advance of the exam adjustment deadlines, to make sure any changes are in place in time.

Individual Learning Plans (ILPs)

An Individual Learning Plan (ILP) is a document that lets your Department/Faculty know of recommended reasonable adjustments that should be put in place to support your learning.

ILPs support students with a health condition, neurodivergence or disability which is classified as a disability under the Equality Act 2010, (i.e. has lasted or is likely to last over 12 months).

Reasonable adjustments are put in place using an ILP  to remove barriers that may prevent you from participating at university, and to help remove any barriers to achieving your full potential.

This can include regular support meetings with your Education Welfare team, specific equipment requirements, or exam arrangements.

For postgraduate students an ILP covers their research and their viva.

To request an ILP:

If possible, in advance of the meeting, you should obtain supporting evidence for example, from a doctor, or a diagnostic assessment report written by an educational psychologist or specialist teacher for Specific Learning Difficulties.

Following an appointment, an ILP will be set up and stored on the Student Record System.

ILPs can be set up before you start your studies at the University or at any point during your time with us.

Devon students: You can update or review your ILP at any stage by contacting Wellbeing Services (wellbeing@exeter.ac.uk) to arrange a discussion.

Cornwall students: You can update or review your ILP at any stage by contacting your Accessiblity Advisor at Accessibility@fxplus.ac.uk or 01326 370460 (via the Compass Helpdesk) or make an appointment through the Study Hub

Wellbeing/Accessibility and your Info Point/Hub Teams will send out periodical reminders to students to think about whether they want to update their ILPs, especially in the run-up to exams.

You can view your ILP in iExeter under the Student Record & Registration tab. Read the Guide to accessing and downloading your ILP.

Your ILP is also viewable by Wellbeing Services/Accessbility, so that our advisors can suggest reasonable adjustments for you, the Exams team and your Department/Faculty support staff, so that they can put those agreed adjustments in place.

For PGR students, your superviosory team and your Director of Postgraduate Research (at Faculty and discipline level) will be able to view your ILP.
