Your accommodation offer
Your offer
You will receive an email with an offer of accommodation that can be viewed on your accommodation account.
There will be a deadline date you need to accept or decline your offer by.
If you do not respond within the deadline, we will chase you by email. If we do not hear from you within 24 hours of our chaser email, we will withdraw the offer of accommodation automatically. Due to the demand for rooms, if you contact us after your room offer has been withdrawn, we may not be able to reassign you accommodation.
Only one offer of accommodation will be made. Please read the offer of accommodation carefully and make sure it is suitable for your needs.
If you reject our offer, we will not make another offer.
Am I guaranteed one of my preferences?
Please note, we do not guarantee you’ll be offered one of your four preferences from your application, so you could be offered a room in a residence you haven’t considered. This depends on how many applications we receive for each residence. View our 2024-25 Undergraduate Application Ratio Table to see how the number of applications received as at the guarantee deadline of 31 July 2024 compared to the number of bedspaces planned for allocation to undergraduate students. N.B. this is not an indication of current availability.
If we cannot allocate you one of your preferences, we will use all the information in your application as a guide to give you the most appropriate room.
In some circumstances, we will source additional accommodation in the city which may not have been advertised.

For undergraduate students whose academic offer is, or becomes unconditional (UF), we process applications before A level results are released in the summer.
When we review undergraduate accommodation applications, we allocate to a percentage of rooms in each residence based on the number of unconditional offers made by the University, and the percentage of accommodation applications received. This means that we do not fill all the rooms within our residences before A levels are released.
This allows us to ensure that there is a mix of students living in our residences whose applications become unconditional at different times, which helps to build a diverse community in each residence during the academic year.
We do undertake allocations through the summer and our current programme is:
Applications received between | Applications processed | Offer will be sent to you |
---|---|---|
8 April to 5 May - UF status only | In May | By 30 June 2024 |
6 May to 31 May - UF status only | In June | By 30 June 2024 |
1 June to 30 June - UF status only | In July | By 26 July 2024 |
1 July to 31 July - UF status only | By 8 August | By 8 August 2024 |
If you are currently interrupted from your studies and will be restarting in year 1 or changing to a different course we would still encourage you submit your application as early as possible. If you know that you will be restarting in year 1 on your original or a new course then please apply as a 'New Undergraduate' student. If you will be progressing to year 2 or a subsequent year of study then we will only be able to accept your application if you gain support from Wellbeing Services. Please see the Supported returning students webpage for more information on this.
We will write to confirm that your application has been received, however we will not be able to process your application until your student status shows that you are cleared to enrol for the next academic year. This might not happen until later into the summer.
Student Records will email you, usually in July, asking you to confirm whether you intend to return to your studies in September. If you are on a period of Medical Interruption then you may also be asked to complete a self-assessment form and submit a medical certificate from your doctor which approves your fitness to return to study. Please try and complete these actions as quickly as possible so that your student status can be updated, as we will then be able to process your accommodation application.
Room allocation procedure
The University of Exeter values the diversity of its community and believes this enriches employment, research, studying and learning experiences. As such, we allocate students within our residences with the aim of achieving a mixed and diverse community.
For undergraduates, applications are processed in a random order, and therefore, rooms are not allocated on a first come, first serve basis.
For postgraduates, applications are processed in date order of receipt, meaning we will allocate on a first come, first serve basis.
If we are unable to allocate you to your first preference of residence, we will look to allocate you to your second preference. If this is also full, we will look to allocate you to your third preference, and so on.
Please see further details on how we allocate rooms.
