Adjustments to Accommodation
The University of Exeter aims to support individuals who, due to disability, a long-term medical condition, sensory or physical impairment, need more accessible accommodation.
The University of Exeter is committed to promoting and implementing equality of opportunity. The Residence teams are supportive of the University’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion policy and work closely with the Wellbeing Services team to provide accessible accommodation to those who require it.
Please contact the Wellbeing Services Team to discuss your accommodation requirements and to ensure reasonable adjustments can be made before your arrival. You will need to complete a prospective student questionnaire as soon as possible and are required to have medical evidence to support your accommodation requests.
Applying
Within your application for accommodation, you will be asked whether you have contacted Wellbeing Services for their support. This is a reminder to ensure you have completed the Prospective Student Form so that Wellbeing Services can review any support adjustments; both studying and living with us. You don't need to provide the accommodation team with the specifics of your condition, as all this information will be gathered by Wellbeing Services.
Please complete the Prospective Student Form as early as you can: this can even be before you have chosen your Firm and Insurance choice universities, or before accommodation applications open. This is important in all cases, but particularly if your needs are significant or the required adjustments are more complex.
Most of our residences can accommodate a variety of adjustments to ensure you get the most out of your university life, but if you are likely to require a fully accessible or adapted room then we would encourage you to apply as early as possible as we only have a limited number of these types of room.
If you apply for accommodation later in the guarantee period or after the guarantee deadline (31 July) then it may be more difficult for us to be able to put the required adjustments in place by the time you begin your course.
Building development works in close proximity to some existing residences are proposed to begin in Summer 2025 – find out more.
Work is carefully programmed to avoid disruption to students, particularly during exam periods. However, on occasion there may be some unavoidable disturbance or inconvenience to students. You should consider the impact of the proposed works when selecting your residence preferences.
We will notify you in advance of any significant building works which are in close proximity to your residence and further details will be made available on our website.
If you require a room in University accommodation for a wellbeing reason for all of your academic programme, this will not automatically be allocated to you and you will need to apply each academic year for accommodation and provide medical evidence with written confirmation of support from the Wellbeing Services or the Student Health Centre. This is to ensure that the room is still suitable to your medical requirements.
For further information, please take a look at our Supported returning students webpage.
Allocation
Once we have received written supporting evidence from Wellbeing Services, we will find you a suitable room/residence in accordance with our room allocation procedure. This is subject to availability at the time of receiving your application and the support from Wellbeing Services.
Not all our accommodation is on campus, and you may be allocated off-campus accommodation if it meets your requirements.
Once we have allocated all students with special requirements, any remaining adapted rooms will be allocated to the next student requesting accommodation.
A note on Support:
While Wellbeing Support will detail any adaptations which need to be considered by the Accommodation Office when allocating to a room, such as requiring an en-suite or requiring a room with level access, it is not possible for the Support to be for a particular residence. We will look at your application preferences first, but you may be offered accommodation within any of the residences which have availability and are deemed to meet the requirements which have been supported.
When completing your application for accommodation, please think carefully about how your accommodation can help you manage your illness or disability. The following are examples of indicative adjustments and equipment which you may wish to consider alongside your application.

Our rooms are occupied throughout the year. If you wish to view one of our accessible rooms* please make sure you have completed the prospective student form with your specific requirements, and have contacted AccessAbility@exeter.ac.uk with a request to view an accessible room. Please ensure that you give us a range of dates when you will be available to come and visit.
At this visit, the Accommodation Team will discuss the current facilities in the room and look at the location of the residence in relation to your subject Hub. If any adaptations are identified, you can then update AccessAbility with your requirements.
*Please note that these viewings are for students who require specially adapted fully accessible rooms, not students who require an en-suite room or studio flat. Requested viewing dates must be at least 10 days in advance; please give us as much notice as possible.

The Accommodation Subsidy (Health and Disability)
The following information applies to students who will be living in university accommodation during 2025/26 academic year. Please see the final dropdown below if you are applying to receive the subsidy during the 2024/25 academic year.
Students who might incur additional costs for en-suite or studio accommodation as a direct result of a disability may be eligible for a subsidy towards these costs on disability grounds. The subsidy is offered and funded by the University of Exeter and is only applicable to students living in University accommodation in Exeter (i.e. residences in the city that are nominated by the University but where the contract is with a private company, and students registered at our Cornwall campuses are not covered by this subsidy).
PLEASE NOTE: The Accommodation Subsidy cannot be backdated. If the Wellbeing support for your allocation to accommodation (which includes confirmation of your eligibility for the Subsidy) is received by us before the start of the September contract period then the subsidy will be applied in full. However, if your Wellbeing support is received after the start of the September contract period then this amount will be reduced on a pro-rota basis, starting from the date that your Wellbeing support is received by us.
You are eligible to apply if you meet one or more of the following criteria:
- A requirement for en-suite/studio in University contracted accommodation as a result of a physical disability i.e. mobility difficulty/wheelchair user, where specific accessibility requirements prevent you from sharing bathroom facilities with others.
- A requirement for en-suite/studio in University contracted accommodation as a result of a sensory disability e.g. visual impairment, that prevents you from maintaining independence when sharing bathroom facilities because other students impact on the accessibility or usability of the shared space.
- A requirement for en-suite/studio in University contracted accommodation as a result of an unseen condition such as a mental health disability, autism spectrum condition or a medical condition that prevents you from using shared bathroom facilities without a substantial impact on your wellbeing and ability to carry out self-care activities.
- Exceptional cases where a requirement for en-suite/studio accommodation is considered appropriate by senior Wellbeing Services staff, based on evidence of ongoing difficulties that substantially impact on your ability to use shared bathroom facilities.
Personal convenience or preference do not form part of the criteria and will not be considered.
Undergraduate and postgraduate Home, EU and International students can apply for the Accommodation Subsidy if they require an en-suite room or studio in University-contracted accommodation due to their disability and/or health needs and meet one or more of the eligibility criteria described above. If you are supported by a registered resident carer for personal care assistance on a separate accommodation contract you will be able to apply for the subsidy for their accommodation as well as your own.
You will need to have engaged with Wellbeing Services for their support with your allocation to accommodation. If you are a prospective student then please fill out their Prospective Student Form as soon as possible. Wellbeing Supported Returning students will also need to speak to Wellbeing Services for their renewed support.
Wellbeing Services will automatically assess your eligibility for the Accommodation Subsidy as part of the support process, and they will include confirmation of your eligibility when they send their support through to the Accommodation Office. You do not need to make a separate application for the Subsidy.
If your application for a subsidy is supported, the Accommodation team will be notified by email of this outcome and will be in touch to confirm the rent subsidy agreement and will then apply credit to your University account.
The subsidy will be available for accommodation in Exeter where the contract is issued by the University only and is not available for any other accommodation offered by the University e.g. residences in the City that are nominated by the University but where the contract is with a private company, or to students who are registered at one of our Cornwall campuses.
If you have been unsuccessful in your application, you will be notified of this outcome and you may supply additional supporting evidence and re-apply for the subsidy.
Assessment of eligibility for the Subsidy forms part of the Wellbeing Support for accommodation process.
If you are a prospective student and you have not already been in touch with Wellbeing Services to discuss your accommodation requirements, please fill out their Prospective Student Form as soon as possible.
After your first year, if you wish to return to university accommodation, you will need to speak to Wellbeing Services to gain their support for your accommodation application.
The subsidy will be calculated annually and will be credited to your account on a termly basis. For 2024/25 the subsidy will be a maximum of £1,660 and for 2025/26 the subsidy will be a maximum of £1,718. Your accommodation fees will be quoted in full on your accommodation offer and student statement but the credit will be applied by the start of each term.
If, at any point, we agree to release you from your contract or you are not charged accommodation fees for any period within your contract, the subsidy will be reduced on a pro-rota basis so you only receive a subsidy for weeks that you are charged accommodation fees.
There is a different process to follow if you are a new/returning student who might be eligible for the Accommodation Subsidy during the 2024/25 academic year.
If you meet the criteria and wish to apply, please complete the Accommodation Subsidy (Health and Disability) Application form and return it to the Wellbeing Services team with any appropriate supporting evidence of your disability (if this has not previously been supplied to Wellbeing Services).
You can email your form to accessability@exeter.ac.uk or alternatively you can post a copy of the form to Reed Mews Wellbeing Centre, University of Exeter, Streatham Drive, Exeter, EX4 4QP. Wellbeing Services aim to respond to your application within 10 working days.
If your application for a subsidy is supported, the Accommodation team will be notified by email of this outcome and will be in touch to confirm the rent subsidy agreement and will then apply credit to your University account.
We are only able to a consider request for a rent discount for students who have followed this process. Any discount will be made once a formal assessment has taken place and will be reduced pro-rata from the date of the request for assessment.
The subsidy will be available for accommodation where the contract is issued by the University only and is not available for any other accommodation offered by the University e.g. residences in the City that are nominated by the University but where the contract is with a private company.
If you have been unsuccessful in your application, you will be notified of this outcome and you may supply additional supporting evidence and re-apply for the subsidy.
