Twin Shared Rooms
To help stretch your budget even further, why not consider applying to share a room in our standard catered residences? A new option for entry in September 2024, you can select on your accommodation application form that you would like to share a room with another person of the same gender and you will benefit from a preferential room price.
We have single and twin occupancy rooms within all our standard catered residences: Lopes Hall, Mardon Hall and Ransom Pickard. In our twin rooms, each student has their own standard single bed, wardrobe, bookshelf, desk, desk lamp or over-desk lighting, chair, waste bin and mini fridge and they share the rest of the room.
Whether you are looking for a more affordable option or some immediate company, opting for a twin room could be the answer.
Frequently Asked Questions
To understand more about how applying for and being allocated to a twin room works, take a look at our questions below.
When you are selecting your preferences on your accommodation application form, 'Twin standard' will be one of the room type options listed for Lopes Hall, Ransom Pickard and Mardon Hall. We will only allocate a twin sharer with you if we get the demand and the other applicant is of the same gender. If we do not get enough applications then we will follow our normal room allocations process and look to your next preference. If you like a particular residence, you may like to select 'catered twin standard' as one preference and 'catered single standard' as another preference. Remember - you will need to select 4 preferences of residence in order to submit your application.
If you are allocated to a twin room for shared occupation then the fees are £194.95 per week, or £6,154.85 for the 32 week catered contract per person.
If you are the sole occupant of the room then the fees are £231.62 per week, or £7,312.89 for the 32 week catered contract.
You'll find two of each of the items you would normally be provided with in the room:
- 2 standard single beds (3'0" x 6'3")
- 2 wardrobes
- 2 bookshelves
- 2 desks
- 2 chairs
- 2 desk lamps (or built-in over-desk lighting)
- 2 noticeboards
- 2 waste bins
- 2 mini fridges
We understand that sharing a room isn't for everyone. If you only want to be allocated to a single occupancy room, that's fine; just select catered single standard as your preference on the application. We will not allocate you into a twin shared room if you haven't applied for it.
If you would like to share a room with someone you already know then you will both need to give each others' details on your accommodation application form. In the 'Additional Notes' section, please give the full name and Exeter Student ID number of the other person. Your friend will also need to put your name and Exeter Student ID number in the notes section of their application. Please note: we are only able to allocate shared rooms to people of the same gender.
We hope that you'll find a good friend in your room-mate, but sharing a space is something you will both need to approach in a respectful and flexible way. Set some ground rules about how you will use the space and consider things like lights and music. You can also speak to the Residence Life team if you need some support in adjusting to your new living environment.
If you still feel that sharing a room isn't working then you can apply to move rooms.
In accordance with section 2.13 of the Terms and Conditions of Residence, if your twin moves out of the room then we will try to replace them with a new sharer in the first instance. This could include moving you to another twin room that has only one occupant.
If we are unable to do this then we will give you 7 days notice that we will be increasing the room fee to the full single-occupancy rate.
