Lilian

Lilian is in her third year of studying a BSc Medical Imaging (Diagnostic Radiography). As a mature student with caring responsibilities, she’s had to balance studying with family life.

I’m originally from Uganda but have lived and worked in Exeter for many years. All my UK working life has been in health and social care – I enjoy working with people. I chose the University of Exeter as it is local to me but also on an open day I attended, a mature student spoke highly of the support available for mature students.

Being a university student has been very challenging, as I’ve had to juggle studying, working and looking after my daughter who is currently five. Being a mature student with so many commitments and having underlying medical problems has been a hindrance to my academic performance, taking time off for appointments and to look after my daughter. There have been financial challenges too, so I’ve had to work on top of studying.

My experience at the University has been enhanced highly by all the support available. There are amazing teams of people who signpost to the correct departments to help; I’ve accessed the hardship fund a couple of times with the support of wellbeing services and the Students' Guild Advice Service. I’ve also found attending breakfast club through the study zone very helpful. The lecture catch-up function has been great for when I’ve missed lectures. Most importantly the Medical Imaging team are so supportive and easily accessible. Though it has been challenging, I don’t regret taking on this journey. I’ve made some amazing friends on the course and as a person I have grown so much. I would recommend the University to anyone.
