Exeter Hidden Gems:
Café’s, Bookshops and Clothes Sales, from a Sunday Roast to a Monday Morning Pick-Me-Up
In my first year at the University of Exeter, I very quickly fell in love with the city. The perfect weekend had to include wandering around, stopping in a café, and shopping. To me, often the best part of a city is the smaller, independent spots, the happenings that you wouldn’t know about unless you really ...Read More- PreviousNext

It's the end of my takeover 😓
BUT!! There's still some time for me to share some memories from my 4 years studying Zoology at @uniexecornwall
From running cross country with @fxuathletics to fieldtrips around the world with @uni_exe_cec this has been such a great few years. I have loved my course and meeting new like-minded people and I can't wait to see what the future holds.
University hasn't always been easy, but will the right support and rest it can be something really special 💚
Today I'll be around to ask any questions you have, but otherwise have a great Easter and good luck with any deadlines 🐣

Today, we're chatting about finances! 💰
As someone who worries about money A LOT and doesn't have the financial security to not worry, the decision to come to university was surrounded by lots of questions about finances. In my first year, I received the Exeter Scholars bursary, alongside the Access to Exeter Bursary (which I've been granted every year). Having these bursaries meant that I had time to settle into university properly before I had to worry about getting a part-time job!
Now, as I come to the end of my fourth year, I can also say that enjoying student life doesn't have to be expensive! I've made so many memories during my time at uni, without hurting my bank account.
I've actually written a couple of blogs all about both themes! Check the stories to find the links!
Let me know if you have any questions about finances, bursaries or making the most of student life 😊

Celebrating Lunar New Year in Penryn Campus: Finding Home Away from Home
Lunar New Year has always been the most special time of the year for me. In Vietnam, it’s more than just a celebration—it’s a time of reunion, where families gather around festive meals, streets glow with red lanterns, and the air is filled with the sound of laughter and firecrackers (well, before they were banned!). It’s a season of warmth, tradition, and new beginnings.
But this year felt ...Read MoreStudents’ blog on Blog

Self-Study as a Law Student 👩🏻⚖️⚖️
Compared to other degrees, first year law has relatively low contact hours. This means that you’ll spend more time prepping for lectures, workshops, and seminars than you’ll spend in them. This isn’t a bad thing, and doesn’t mean that you’re not being taught the same as other degrees - it’s actually a good thing! Having more time for self-study allows you to spend longer developing key skills such as critical analysis and reflection, and also provides you with more opportunities to complete extra reading for your modules.
Not only this, but law having more self-study time than contact hours gives you greater flexibility around your work schedule, allowing you to fit a full-time degree around part time work, socialising, and all-important networking opportunities! I’ve had the chance to participate in some incredible networking and career development events both in person and online!
I hope this helped teach you something new about studying law at Exeter! - PreviousNext

What do I get up to as a Cyber Security Specialist?
At Lineal, I help businesses stay secure – whether that’s detecting threats, securing systems or ensuring compliance.
Every day brings new challenges and opportunities to learn. Some of the key tasks I work on include:
Uncovering vulnerabilities – auditing security systems & infrastructure to identify weaknesses before attackers do
Defending against cyber threats – monitoring networks and responding to suspicious activity
Digital forensics – tracing actions of attackers in security incidents & breaches to understand how they happened and how to prevent them
Locking down systems – hardening infrastructure & policies to make attackers’ lives difficult
Navigating security compliance – as an Assured Service Provider for the National Cyber Security Centre, we assist businesses to meet industry regulations and strengthen their security posture
Empowering teams with knowledge – training users & technical staff with security awareness to be the first line of defence
No two days are the same, making cyber security a fantastic career!

STUDHYANS (STUDIES) 📖 📓 🩻
MOY (EXTRAS) ✨️ 🫁
Cornwall is a beautiful place to be able to work and live! I'm a Cornish local, so maybe I'm a little biased. We have over 300+ beaches and so many incredible and beautiful green fields, forests, and attractions. If you enjoy exploring (and possibly a lot of driving due to public transport challenges), then you may really like it down here. Being able to go for walks next to the sea is such a great way to exercise and clear my head is a great way to keep balanced while studying and exam prepping.
Apprenticeships are often a full-time experience, usually a 37.5 hours scenario. 7.5 hours is put aside for study. In my trust, we are allowed to study from home, but some hospitals may ask you to come in to study. I use a combination of my own personal anatomy and physics books, as well as the use of public libraries such as the Knowledge Spa at the Royal Cornwall Hospital. The knowledge Spa is open to all staff, as well as students of Exeter and Plymouth University. It follows great professional development standards and brings in new knowledge regularly.
For my extras, I do volunteer to help increase my confidence with speaking and tackling new challenges. As an autistic woman, I can find it really hard to branch out and try new things as this causes a lot of stress. However, I want to keep pushing my comfort zone and try my absolute best at what I do. In 2020, I pitched in front of the executives of my hospital to raise £10,000 in aid of adults with cystic fibrosis. I won, improved standards of care, and still work under my unofficial charity name of Anella (breathe in Cornish). I am also the young members officer for UNISON. I want to represent young members (18-30) to avoid the struggles I deal with and to empower them, and help them to feel confident in the workplace.
I really encourage anyone struggling with confidence to go out there and try. People are there to help you, and it's incredible to look back on what you have achieved.

Hey there, my lovelies! ❤️
Tonight’s post is all about the things I get up to outside of my course! While I love being a medical student, I also jump at any chance to get involved in extracurriculars—it makes uni life so much more exciting! Especially when I have the time in my student years to get involved.
From volunteering and teaching to writing research articles and even performing in a hospital charity panto (ohhh yes I am 🎭), I’ve thrown myself into as many amazing opportunities as I can, and I highly recommend them to anyone even slightly tempted!
But don’t worry, I also make time for fun—whether it’s a lil boogie with friends, beach or nature trips, wholesome nights in, hiking, or travelling around the world on mi holibobs! ✨ Life’s about balance, after all!

From the campus onward, Exeter reveals its charm.
My favorite is Reed Hall, an ancient building with its gardens, a timeless spot of unique beauty.
Behind the Sports Park area lie the Belvidere Meadows, green fields hidden away. This secluded place, surrounded by nature, is perfect for finding a moment of peace.
Moving into the city, the gardens here are also my favorite spots. The Southernhay Gardens, behind the cathedral, Bury Meadow Park, and Northernhay Gardens are definitely worth visiting for a relaxing afternoon.
Of course, I cannot overlook the Cathedral, which majestically dominates the center of Exeter. After a short walk from here, near the Royal Albert Memorial Museum, you can find a street that reminds of a Harry Potter film: Gandy Street. It’s said that this little alleyway inspired Diagon Alley!
I’ll finish by mentioning The Quay, the beautiful riverside area. I love strolling along the river, watching the elegant swans as they swim. - PreviousNext

Here in Exeter, there are various societies or student groups that organize activities, offering a great way to meet new people and take a break from studying! My favorite activities so far have been with the Photography Society, the Baking Society, and Residence Life.
The @exeterphotosoc organizes a variety of activities, from photowalks to darkroom sessions! If you’re passionate about photography, this is definitely the society for you.
The @exeunibakesoc hosts a weekly baking class, a wonderful opportunity to try out new recipes, meet new people, and prepare delicious treats for breakfast :)
Lastly, @exeterreslife focuses on student well-being. It’s a student-run organization that manages residence halls and fosters relationships among students. Each week, they organize various activities, such as cooking sessions, arts and crafts, quizzes, and trips. Personally, I love everything they organize, and thanks to them, l’ve met most of my friends here in Exeter. Additionally, Residence Life offers support services you can turn to if you’re facing any difficulties! - PreviousNext

Hi, it’s Hyomin :) Today, I wanted to share my thoughts about the study spaces at the University of Exeter! The campus offers so many great spots to study! There’s something for everyone whether you prefer quiet places, group study areas, private rooms, or high chairs with desks, you can pick whatever suits your needs best. While studying during this holiday, I truly felt it’s an amazing place to focus and get work done. Personally, I think the Exeter Library Archive is also really well-organized. FieldTrip Recap 🇭🇰
What better day to Recap on our fieldtrip to Hong Kong than #WorldCivetDay
During our MSci Global Challenges Fieldtrip, we visited Kadoorie Farm, where we got to see all of the animals they have rescued and rehabilitated. As an intern with @thecivetproject I was so excited to see that the team at the Farm had rescued and cared for a Masked Palm Civet.
This trip was a fantastic insight into how there are challenges between humans and wildlife all the time, and how with better education, we can work to create a world where all thrive.
The trips available on the Zoology course are wide-ranging and with lots of highlights. I've been to the Isles of Scilly, Costa Rica, and Hong Kong !!!
Do you have any questions about fieldtrips? Finances for fieldtrips? Or fieldtrip selection?

student life/ socialising
I get a lot of questions about what it's like living here in terms of night life/ things to do/ keeping student life fun and interesting and the main thing I always say is living here makes it easy to incorporate balance in to your life - as much as I love a few drinks and a night out, I equally love a beach bonfire, or a night in with my girls!
Here's some photos of some of things I've been up to, and some of the places I love to go!
1. Chintz- such a cool venue and perfect to start the night off/ play games and catch up with friends
2. Boat Party with the Dance Society back in November!
3. Secret Santa night with my friends back in Decembe
4. Trip to Truro for the Christmas markets!
5. Halloween ball with G.E.M.S- can you guess our group costume?
6. Downstairs at Mango's- not unusual to end up in the club upstairs on a night out!
7. Beerwolf- the book pub! Probably one of my fav places here, perfect stop on a pub crawl or for a friend catch up
8.Flashback to the silent disco at Freshers! Perfect way to start off uni
9. Another Halloween event- I think we did three last term! Was super fun!
10. UV rockpooling with MarineWatch- this was so fun and we found some amazing stuff, although I did fall in a huge rockpool to my friends' amusement
11. Trip to Truro for dinner and a cincert- I think this is Hubbox? The loaded fries are delightful

Hi everyone!
I’m Shan, and I am an apprentice radiographer 💀 🩻 studying between the Royal Cornwall Hospital and Exeter University.
I am here to kickstart the first half of the apprenticeship week! I will be sharing what it is like to be an apprentice in Cornwall as well as some fun stuff to do if you ever decide to visit. 😊
So I want to share a little bit about me. This is my second apprenticeship, I initially left college and came to RCHT (Royal Cornwall Hospital) to do a level 3 healthcare diploma in clinical imaging support.
Afterwards, I worked in every modality before settling on MRI for three years. In my downtime between my previous and current apprenticeship, I undertook a lot of personal development. I raised £10,000 through a hospital scheme to better the lives of adults with cystic fibrosis while they stay in our hospital. Because the population of adults with CF (cystic fibrosis) is less than over places in the UK, we did not meet the same funding or standards of care. I sought to change that. The room as of this year is fully completed, and I am already hearing stories about how it’s improving their long-term stays (usually 2 weeks plus)
I am also a keen advocate, I sit on the committee for UNISON as their young members officer (albeit in a more backseat capacity due to my degree!) and I am also part of the women’s group for the Society of Radiographers.
Speaking of advocacy, I am here to showcase apprenticeships and support those who see these posts and who may also be interested in health apprenticeships in Cornwall. Just comment below or DM, and I’ll get back to you. 😊 I will also be posting an ask me anything in the next coming days, so be on the lookout for that.

Studying MA Education Online from abroad
Hi, my name is Sally, and I’m currently in my second year of the MA Education with Leadership and Management course at the University of Exeter (2023/24). ✨A Week in the Life of a Medical Student!✨
Hello again lovely people!
This week has been a bit quieter in terms of contact hours, with some facilitators unwell. So, I thought I’d take the chance to share a little insight into what a typical week looks like for a medical student!✨
This would be in our clinical years, and does really vary from week to week! It really depends on how you approach the course. Some students thrive by being on the wards as much as possible, getting hands-on experience, while others prefer structured self-directed learning (SDL). Whatever works best, as long as you show up for compulsory placements! 😁😇
The rumours are true—medicine is tough. We’re mostly a bunch of overachievers, often competitive by nature (or maybe that’s just me…), constantly pushing ourselves to do more. While that drive can be a strength, it can also lead to imposter syndrome or feelings of self-doubt, especially in a cohort of such incredibly high-achieving students.
I suppose my point here is just to say, anyone reading this (may be medic, may not be - if it resonates, it resonates!), you are doing an incredible job and I hope you can spend even a minute of today reflecting on how far you have come, how much you have learned and how lucky our university is to have us represent them!
(It is always okay to seek help. If you feel you may want to get in contact with the wellbeing services, their website is here https://www.exeter.ac.uk/students/wellbeing/)
My love to all ❤️ - PreviousNext

Travel Tips 🚂
Today, I’ll talk to you about how to plan some trips around the United Kingdom! I admit that I haven’t traveled much so far because I prefer to wait for spring, but I still feel confident enough to share a few tips.
I’ve mostly traveled by train, and I recommend getting a Railcard. This is a discount card for students aged 16 to 25 that allows you to save on train fares. A great app for planning your trips is Trainline. If possible, buy your tickets in advance, as it will be cheaper!
You can also travel by coach, using companies like Flixbus, Megabus, or National Express.
There are some societies, such as the “Adventure Society” or the “Out of Doors Society,” that organize trips to nearby areas. It’s a great way to explore and meet people.
Exeter is close to the sea, and I highly recommend visiting Exmouth and Dawlish Warren. You can enjoy the famous fish and chips while walking along the coastline.
Bath is a charming city that’s absolutely worth a visit! Its Georgian-style buildings will make you fall in love. It’s just over an hour by train from Exeter, so it’s definitely worth the trip.
Cornwall isn’t too far either, though it’s more of a summer destination. So far, I’ve been to St Ives, and I was enchanted by the peace of this seaside town. And let’s not forget the beaches and the lighthouse that inspired Virginia Woolf to write her novel “To the Lighthouse”! Students’ blog on Blog
My experience of working in part-time jobs while at university (including my tips!)
Hey everyone! I’m Zara, a (now third) year Psychology student who has dabbled in part-time work while studying at the University of Exeter. This is very much a spotlight on the Dance Society, as well as TapJam and Hip Hop- I train weekly with all these groups as well as external classes. I'm also a part of MarineWatch and G.E.M.S ( Geography, Environment and Marine Science) .
One of the highlights of my time here has been dancing! Dance is a huge part of life and so being able to do it at uni was very important to me.
Due to the shared nature of the Penryn campus we are lucky enough to take advantage of the amazing performing arts facilities here, so I spend a lot of my time in the dance studios either taking classes or making choreo/ training with my friends.
The Dance Society has been pivotal to my time at university so far- it's given me some of my closest friends and a space to do what I love the most.
Joining a society at uni is probably one of the best ways of making the most of your time here, as well as surrounding yourself with people with similar interests to you . It's also a great opportunity to learn a new skill and push you put your comfort zone- at the start of term I tried out classes with the aerial society and I also recently signed up to country dancing!
Here are some pictures of what I've been up to in terms of dance and with the society- including socials, individual practice and our showcase! Also enjoy a snippet at the end of me and my flatmate and friend Nae playing around in the studio! - PreviousNext

out and about in Cornwall- beaches!
so I constantly bang on about how much I love living here, and one thing that makes this county so special is our beautiful coastline! Im very lucky to have made some beautiful memories with my friends so thought i' d share a few with you- currently I'm holed up in the library as it's deadline season so making this post has made me very nostalgic but also very excited for summer!
there are way more photos and ideas to share than I can include on here, but hopefully this is a good snapshot of some of the beautiful sights and experiences I've been lucky to have over the last six months !
1- 2 Gyllyngvase Beach- our closest beach and a common hangout for students and locals all year round
3- 4Godrevy- the most beautiful sunsets and seals- what more could you want?
5-6- Swanpool Beach- the next closest beach to Gylly, definitely trying to visit this one more as it's gorgeous!
7-9 -Pendennis Point- one of my favourite spots, perfect to sit and watch the sunset
10- St Ives- not a beach pic but I love it here- when bathed in sunlight town and harbour is unbelievably beautiful
11-14- Grebe Beach- we've had many a sea swim here, and it has the most gorgeous sunsets. Sienna also made a new bestie on our last visit🐦
15- Poldhu Beach- one we discovered quite recently which has the most amazing hot chocolates, 10/10 recommend
Hope this helps give you an idea of what life here is like! - PreviousNext

hey! My name is Jas, I'm a 1st year Environmental Science student at Exeter's Penryn Campus and I'm going to be doing a student takeover this week!
I absolutely love studying in Cornwall, and as someone who was originally a bit sceptical about moving down here (that feeling soon disappeared) hopefully I can help answer any concerns or queries you have about what it's like living, working and studying here,
A bit about me to start us off:
I'm a nature lover and performer originally from Somerset- I love all things beach, animals and theatre, and you can most likely find me with my friends exploring new parts of Cornwall, in one of our dance studios on campus or out and about in Fal! I took a gap year before coming to uni which I spent working as a barista and doing extra work in TV shows. Returning to education was a big change but something I'm really grateful I made the decision to do.
Here are some things I'm hoping to cover whilst you follow along for a week in my life!
- life in Cornwall
- societies/ extra curriculars
- making friends/ socialising
- student support/ wellbeing
- studying Environmental Science/ CGES( Centre for Geography and Environmental Science) subject
- part time work/ financing uni
If there's anything else in particular you would like me to cover this week, feel free to comment it below. I'll also be doing some Q and A's throughout the week so will be more than happy to answer any questions then 😊
In the meantime thank you so much for reading- I'm looking forward to sharing my week with you all 🌻✨️

When deciding whether to commute to uni, or live in accommodation, there were a lot of factors that influenced my decision. 🚂💰⏰
1. Money - One of the huge benefits of commuting is that you save a lot of money on living costs. Even if you’re paying your parents rent to live at home, this will likely work out a lot cheaper than accommodation! As somebody who wouldn’t be entitled to a high maintenance loan, I didn’t like the idea of having to work lots of extra hours to be able to afford rent as a law degree is challenging enough without having extra restraints on your time!
2. Family - Family is one of, if not the most important thing to me. I hated the idea of being separated from them for weeks at a time, especially as we’re a super close family! I’m incredibly grateful to be able to spend extra time with them over the next few years, and I feel so lucky that I have them to come home to every day.
3. Distance - I live a 40 minute train ride from Exeter Uni, so it’s easy for me to commute to and from university whenever I have a lecture or seminar.
4. Social Life - While it can be harder to go on nights out if you’re living at home, it doesn’t mean it’s impossible! If anything, it makes you more intentional with what nights out you really want to go on, and also encourages you to socialise with friends during the daytime! I’ve included some pictures of nights and days out that I’ve enjoyed while at uni. It’s even better if you have a friend that doesn’t mind you staying over after a night out!
5. Contact Hours - Compared to other subjects, LLB Law is a relatively low contact-hour subject, with less than 10 contact hours a week in first year. As a lot of the first year is self-directed, I wouldn’t be travelling to university much on the train, meaning that commuting wouldn’t tire me out too much!
6. Flexible Timetable - If you have a lecture at a super early time that you can’t attend, there’s normally a repeat lecture that you can attend later in the day or week! You can also get into contact with the university about moving certain lectures/seminars to better fit your timetable.
I hope this helps anyone in a similar position! Students’ blog on Blog

A little insight into my week..
As an apprentice radiographer, I'm expected to work in many imaging departments but also take part in gaining experience of other workplaces. As well as the seemingly endless amounts of coursework and projects.
This week, I had the privilege of working with some nursing staff on a community hospital site. This helps me gain insight, understanding, and respect for the way they work and allows me to understand who is supporting us when they visit X-ray.🩻
When bridging from year 1 to year 2, you will be asked to do a bridging task, which usually involves the improved skills that you've noticed you may be less confident in.
Please let me know if you're curious and have any more questions about how my weeks vary or what I get up to academically!- PreviousNext

Here’s a little intro to kick things off:
I’m a 4th-year medical student based at the Truro campus in Cornwall, and honestly, I love it here. The scenery, the community, and the opportunities are incredible, and I can’t wait to take you behind the scenes to show you what studying medicine at UEMS is really like! 💃🕺
I couldn’t do this without a tribute to my lovely friends—you’re all absolutely incredible and make life so much brighter. Thank you for your unwavering support and putting up with my very loud laugh💕
Outside of uni, I love solo traveling and have explored some pretty incredible places around the world. 🌍 I’m also super passionate about child welfare and advocacy. As an aspiring Paediatrician, I volunteer for NSPCC and Childline and was recently honoured to become a Global Youth Ambassador for TheirWorld. On top of that, I’ve been involved in local charity events for children and am gearing up for a paediatric medical mission in Rwanda soon (more on that later!). But I have and will digress….
This week, I’ll plan to make some daily “Day in the Life” vlogs (bear with me - I’m not great with technology!) From lectures to life in Truro, I’d love for you to join me. If there’s anything specific you’d like to see or know, drop a comment or DM—I’m all ears!

Hey, I’m Riccardo!
Being Italian, I can say I’m very selective and picky when it comes to food, as I’m used to the flavors of my homeland. However, here in Exeter, I haven’t struggled to find restaurants I enjoy! I’ve had the chance to try some traditional English dishes, as well as Oriental flavors and Italian dishes like pizza. Of course, I also love exploring the local cafes, they’re perfect spots to sip a cup of tea.
• Old Firehouse: the perfect place for a gathering with friends. They serve large pizzas meant to be shared between two people. The atmosphere is magical and very relaxing!
• Eat on the Green: located right in front of the majestic Cathedral, eating with this view is priceless! They offer some traditional English dishes, meticulously prepared. This is where I tried the famous “English breakfast.”
• iFood Thai Taste: I had never tried Thai food before, so this place was a discovery! | recommend the stir-fried noodles with tofu, a true delight.
• The Glorious Art House: a small cafe decorated like a work of art, the name says it all! It’s the perfect spot to enjoy a cup of tea with milk, just like a true Englishman.
• Mango’s Cafe: situated along the beautiful Quayside, this is another spot where I highly recommend a cup of tea. The staff is extremely friendly, and the place is very charming.
• Franco Manca: my latest discovery! This might be the place where you can find pizza most similar to the Neapolitan one. I apreciated the quality of the ingredients and the kindness of the staff.

Studying Politics and International Relations is incredibly interesting and thought provoking. I would recommend it to anyone who has a wider interest society and governance. Politics and IR has the ability of being incredibly cross disciplinary meaning that I am never bored. Here are the reasons why I chose my course and decided to study here in penryn:
1. Sustainability linked modules - I thought that this was a very interesting topic and very useful for employability. These modules have been my favourite.
2. The Campus - penryn campus is simply beautiful (all the pictures on this post are of the campus)
3. Penryn campus is quite small, I found that this made it easier to make friends and know your lecturers.
4. Falmouth town - this Cornish sea side town is a super artsy fun place. Theres always something fun to do here.
5. As stupid as it sounds the sea was the deciding factor about studying here. The beaches are so lovely and I love a sea swim. - PreviousNext

Hi guys, I thought would give you some of my favourite night life spots in Falmouth.
1. Chintz - this is a really cool venue that does live music and has a cool pub upstairs filled with trinkets.
2. Cornish Bank - this is the local music venue that also hosts activities during the day. They recently opened up a pub below the bank called Touc inn, which is super lovely as well.
3. The boathouse is my favourite pub in town. It’s just very cosy and is a place with lovely views of the sea.
4. In the third term beach barbecues in the evening are a go too. When I was applying to universities, this is what really stood out for me in regard to Cornwall.
