Engineering facilities
We continually invest in our teaching and research facilities and have recently completed a £6.5m programme of improvements to support the delivery of engineering and to ensure our students have access to the best possible facilities during their time at Exeter.
The new facilities provide space for dynamic, flexible and responsive learning, in a safe, modern environment and enable our students to ‘learn by doing’ from day one and throughout their time at the University.
Our facilities help prepare our students to enter the workplace with both the theoretical and practical skills needed to launch their careers as professional engineers.
New facilities include:
- A new Makerspace, run for students by student champions, to support creative and collaborative project work, from entrepreneurial students striving to be innovators of the future to projects to create quick prototypes for testing and exploring ideas.
- A new Fabrications Lab contains programmable equipment such 3D printers, 3D Scanners and laser cutting facilities. Our students are able to explore and experiment in this space to develop and enhance creative engineering skills.
- A remodelled Mechanical Workshop mimics what students will find in many modern industrial settings, with up-to-date, programmable equipment, such as semi-automated milling machines and lathes, guillotines and bandsaws.
- A new, fully equipped Vehicle Assembly Area supports the Formula Student programme, where students can design and build a race car and compete nationally with other University teams.
- An optimised General Purpose Lab (GP LAB) has new, modern equipment that is used across Engineering disciplines to demonstrate and reinforce the knowledge gained during degree programmes. This space also provides general test facilities to support student projects.
- A refurbished Electronics Lab has modern, bespoke benching to accommodate new electronics test equipment and integrated computers.
- A newly developed and extended Exeter Digital Enterprise Systems Lab (ExDES Lab) gives our students access to advanced robotic and digital simulation equipment. Find out more about this on the Engineering Management website.
