Entry requirements
To apply for this course you need to be employed by a participating NHS or voluntary sector service - see a full list of applicable services here.
This course is suitable for experienced staff with significant experience of working with children, young people and families’ mental health within a supervisory capacity. Candidates will be expected to have postgraduate professional training or equivalent professional experience in the area in which they are supervising (CBT, Systemic family practice, parenting, 0-5s, or CWP). For those within Mental Health Support Teams they will be part of their local offer to support Education Mental Health Practitioners with suitable experience and training.
Candidates will also be expected to have a minimum of two years’ post qualification supervisory experience, and a minimum of four years’ experience in Children and Young People’s mental health.
CBT supervisors must have either provisional or full therapist accreditation with BABCP on application to the course
Parenting supervisors are required to be accredited with BABCP, so will need to have completed the BABCP’s core profession pathway/KSA or have a core profession and be eligible to apply for accreditation as a parenting practitioner.
SFP Supervisors must have full family therapist accreditation with AFT. Supervisors must be AFT registered Systemic Supervisors or for those who meet the competencies required for registration, eligible for registration. (AFT will provide processes for achieving registration through an Apel route.)
In areas with limited resource of registered Systemic Supervisors, supervisors would need to have completed a qualifying training in Systemic Family Therapy, have a minimum of 3 years' post qualifying experience, have gained previous experience of supervising systemic practice within a CAMHS setting and must make a commitment (which is to be supported in writing by the service) to start an AFT accredited or equivalent systemic supervision course within 2 years.

Course content
Within mental health and social care settings it is becoming increasingly recognised that clinical supervision plays a fundamental role in improving clinical outcomes, supporting practitioners and ensuring safe and efficient practice. In this programme you will develop an advanced and critical knowledge of the theory surrounding clinical supervision and mastery of the competencies associated with clinical skills and/or case management supervision. Considerable opportunity for supervision and reflection on your supervisory practice will be afforded to enhance learning and ongoing action planning. The programme is delivered over a single year.

Applications to this programme may only be made through the NHS or voluntary sector services where you work and not directly through the University of Exeter.
Fees
This course is funded by Health Education England, so fees are not payable by candidates. You will be put forward for the course by your participating service and will need to be available for approximately 1.5 days per week for training/study (2 days for SFP due to live supervision)

Teaching and research
Teaching consists of tutorials, small group supervision, practice based supervision of supervision placement, and guided independent study.
Types of assessments include:

- supervisor rated competency tape or audio recording
- and self assessment and supervision practice portfolio.
