On this subject activity strand, you will explore the historic background that underpins our understanding of the world, its challenges, and opportunities. You will not only study aspects of ancient Mediterranean world, especially Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome, but will also get the chance to study Archaeology and its diverse range of topics, from human evolution, forensic anthropology, to the creation of today's landscapes.

Activity locations

All subject activity sessions will take place on the University of Exeter Streatham campus, with the exception of one field trip.

Students who choose this subject activity strand will sample the History Department's expertise in different forms of historical thought and analysis. We will journey from medieval Europe to colonial India and the contemporary world, and introduce you to different ways in which the past can be conceived, read, and written.

Each subject activity session will be similar to how we teach undergraduates; not a lecture, but a discussion based around a fragment of the past (such as the image above). Through such fragments, we shall discuss the different ways in which the past can be rethought – of political, social, cultural, economic, military, diplomatic, and postcolonial histories.

This subject activity strand will act as both an introduction to history and equip you with the analytical skills necessary to succeed at university and beyond. It is a chance to experience not only what it is like to be a history undergraduate, but what it is like to be an historian.

There are no specific entry requirements for this subject activity strand. 

In order to pass the programme, you must attend a minimum of 5 out of 6 subject activity sessions, as well as the Exeter Scholars Student Conference.
