Physics and Mathematics
Physics is the study of matter, energy, and the interaction between them, but fundamentally it is about trying to answer the big questions about nature and the Universe through theory, observations, and experiments.
Mathematics has always been the language of engineering and the physical sciences. Today, the reach of mathematics extends to the social sciences, computing and the internet, biology, finance, and many other areas. The rigorous approach to mathematics at university level provides deep insights into questions such as: are there different sizes of infinity? Is every number the solution of a polynomial equation? Can every angle be trisected using only a ruler and compass?
In this subject strand you will get a sense of what it is like to be a mathematics or physics student as well as gaining a good insight into the exciting, world-leading research conducted at the University of Exeter.

Activity Locations
All subject activity sessions will take place on the University of Exeter Streatham campus, with the exception of one field trip to the Met Office (transport leaving from the Streatham campus).
In this subject activity strand, you’ll have the opportunity to learn about the practice and content of both mathematics and physics at undergraduate level and beyond. You'll be invited to attend and participate in talks, workshops, example lectures, problem classes, and lab experiments presented by university lecturers and world-leading researchers.
You will learn about their work on cutting-edge research in areas such as number theory, cryptography, the weather of heavenly bodies, chaos theory, astronomy, electromagnetic and acoustic materials, biomedical physics, and quantum systems and nanomaterials.
To help you get a better idea of what it’s like to study at university, there will be opportunities to meet current undergraduate students who will share their experiences, help in the workshops, and provide useful advice.
This subject activity strand has contributions from the following degree programmes:
- BSc Mathematics
- BSc Physics
- BSc Physics with Astrophysics
In order to be considered for this activity strand, students must be studying Maths at A Level.
In the event of this subject strand being oversubscribed, priority for places will be given to students also studying Physics at A Level.
In order to pass the programme, you must attend a minimum of 5 out of 6 subject activity sessions, as well as the Exeter Scholars Student Conference.
