This module provides a full semester of studies in the mathematical sciences and related subjects at an agreed partner university in a foreign country, normally where the language of instruction is English; this may be in Europe, North America, Australia or elsewhere. It provides you with the excellent opportunity to gain knowledge of mathematical sciences material that is not covered at Exeter, or that is studied from a new perspective. In addition it allows you to experience how other cultures learn, perceive and use the mathematical sciences. Study at another agreed partner university where the language of instruction is not English may be approved subject to the requirement that you can prove fluency in that language to A level equivalence. This module is available to students on a four-year integrated masters programme in term one of stage three. To register on this module, you must achieve 55% at stage two and 60% average in term one of stage two.
This module aims to give you a unique opportunity to study mathematics abroad for a full semester. You will have the opportunity to gain knowledge of mathematical sciences material that is not covered at Exeter, or that is studied from a new perspective. Furthermore, you will get the chance to experience the exciting challenge of settling in a new environment both socially and academically. In addition, you will discover different teaching methods, strengthening your academic skills. On a personal level, it will teach you to independently overcome the difficulties of settling in a different country with different habits, rules and culture. This alone is a highly valuable aspect of the module.
On successful completion of this module, you should be able to:
Module Specific Skills and Knowledge:
1 demonstrate knowledge of mathematical sciences material that is not covered at Exeter, or that is studied from a new perspective;
2 understand more of how other cultures learn, perceive and use the mathematical sciences.
Discipline Specific Skills and Knowledge:
3 appreciate different approaches to teaching and learning.
Personal and Key Transferable/ Employment Skills and Knowledge:
4 work independently over an extended timescale;
5 reflect on your own personal and cultural background by comparison and contrast to living and working in a different country and culture.
This is specific to the host university concerned. The programme of modules studied overseas will be chosen to be roughly equivalent to the workload of 45 Exeter credits.

A transcript of marks will be provided by the host university (following the guidelines of the European Credit Transfer Scheme (ECTS) where appropriate). These marks will be translated into Exeter equivalents where necessary and will contribute 75% towards module assessment. The work submitted for the final 25% will compromise a scientific essay (2,000 words) on one of the themes covered in the module MTHM036 Research in Mathematical Sciences, together with a 10-minute oral presentation on the same theme.
