MODULE TITLEComputer Aided Engineering Design CREDIT VALUE15
MODULE CODEECMM103 MODULE CONVENERDr Samuel Erland (Coordinator)
DURATION: TERM 1 2 3
DURATION: WEEKS 12 0 0
Number of Students Taking Module (anticipated) 37
DESCRIPTION - summary of the module content

Computer software has revolutionised the ways in which we create and modify engineering drawings and designs. This module gives you the chance to investigate the use of computer aided drawing tools for a variety of engineering applications, from creating 3D engineering designs to producing 2D drawings. You will also enhance your employment prospects by developing your skills in a variety of CAD program used worldwide by engineers in many industries. AutoCAD and Solidworks are very popular software packages used in the engineering industry. You will learn both CAD packages and you will appreciate advantages and differences between the two packages.

Prerequisite module: ECM1101 or equivalent

AIMS - intentions of the module

This module is designed to provide you with current and useful employment skills, through teaching you how to use of 2D and 3D computer aided drawings design tools. You will also learn how to use advanced CAD software, and to understand the operational principles underlying Computer Aided Drawing.

INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES (ILOs) (see assessment section below for how ILOs will be assessed)

This is a constituent module of one or more degree programmes which are accredited by a professional engineering institution under licence from the Engineering Council. The learning outcomes for this module have been mapped to the output standards required for an accredited programme, as listed in the current version of the Engineering Council’s ‘Accreditation of Higher Education Programmes’ document (AHEP-V3).

This module contributes to learning outcomes: EA1m - EA3m, EA5m, EA2fl, D1m, D5m, D7m, D2fl, D8m, EP2m.

A full list of the referenced outcomes is provided online: http://intranet.exeter.ac.uk/emps/studentinfo/subjects/engineering/accreditation/

The AHEP document can be viewed in full on the Engineering Council’s website, at http://www.engc.org.uk/

On successful completion of this module, you should be able to:

Module Specific Skills and Knowledge: EA1m-EA3m

1. prove high level skills with industry-standard CAD design software;

2. understand the theory behind CAD programs and how they are applied.

Discipline Specific Skills and Knowledge: EA5m, EA2fl, D1m, D5m, D7m, D2fl, D8m, EP2m

3. demonstrate utilisation of CAD tools to an advanced level of engineering applications;

4. exhibit skills through the completion of a number of CAD design and projects.

Personal and Key Transferable / Employment Skills and Knowledge: EP2m.

5. show industry applicable skills in the professional production of engineering designs developed using CAD software;

6. reveal an insight into the role, importance and application of CAD in the professional engineering environment.

RE-ASSESSMENT NOTES

If a module is normally assessed entirely by coursework, all referred/deferred assessments will normally be by assignment.

If a module is normally assessed by examination or examination plus coursework, referred and deferred assessment will normally be by examination. For referrals, only the examination will count, a mark of 50% being awarded if the examination is passed. For deferrals, candidates will be awarded the higher of the deferred examination mark or the deferred examination mark combined with the original coursework mark.
