To check a person’s health, humankind has developed numerous ways of measuring techniques and devices from old stethoscopes to recent Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). In structural engineering, developing ways of checking structural health and performance is one of most important challenges to prevent structural collapses together with cost effectiveness in maintenance of civil infrastructures. This module introduces the state of art technologies of structural health and performance monitoring (SHPM) system and discusses how to utilise SHPMs for better decision-makings of infrastructure maintenance.
A structural health and performance monitoring system consists of various elements: sensors, data acquisition systems, signal processing, data interpretation, and visualisation. The module intends to provide knowledge and skill needed for each element, together with designing and utilisation of the system.
This is a constituent module of one or more degree programmes which are accredited by a professional engineering institution under licence from the Engineering Council. The learning outcomes for this module have been mapped to the output standards required for an accredited programme, as listed in the current version of the Engineering Council’s ‘Accreditation of Higher Education Programmes’ document (AHEP-V3).
This module contributes to learning outcomes: SM1fl, SM2fl, SM3fl, EA1fl, EA2fl, EA3fl, D1fl, D2fl, D3fl, ET1fl, ET2fl, ET4fl, ET5fl, ET6fl, EP1fl, EP2fl, EP3fl, EP4fl, G1fl, G2fl, G3fl, G4fl
