MODULE TITLEIntroduction to Mechanical Engineering Design CREDIT VALUE15
MODULE CODEECM2103 MODULE CONVENERProf Tim Holsgrove (Coordinator)
DURATION: TERM 1 2 3
DURATION: WEEKS 0 12 0
Number of Students Taking Module (anticipated) 114
DESCRIPTION - summary of the module content

Engineering design is a complex activity, which combines very technical aspects with more creative ones. In this module, you will learn a rigorous method of design (stagegate innovation process), which will give you an understanding of the real design-manufacture-test process. You will produce engineering drawings and appreciate their use as a method of unambiguous communication. Furthermore, you will be able to analyse and select basic mechanical components such as threads, gears and bearings as well as materials. In addition, you will learn how to bring together multiple aspects of the core course, and apply them to exercises in design, drawing, and analysis. During the course you will also have the opportunity to work in a small team to design a mechanical device.

AIMS - intentions of the module

The aim of this module is to introduce you to the fundamental concepts in engineering design. This module is designed to establish the foundation for advanced mechanical design modules and mechanical design orientated projects.

INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES (ILOs) (see assessment section below for how ILOs will be assessed)

This is a constituent module of one or more degree programmes which are accredited by a professional engineering institution under licence from the Engineering Council. The learning outcomes for this module have been mapped to the output standards required for an accredited programme, as listed in the current version of the Engineering Council’s ‘Accreditation of Higher Education Programmes’ document (AHEP-V3).

This module contributes to learning outcomes: SM2p, SM2m, EA1p-EA3p, EA1m-EA3m, D1p-D3p, D1m-D3m, D5p, D5m, D8m, ET3p, ET3m, ET5p, ET5m, ET6p, ET6m, EP2p-EP4p, EP2m-EP4m, EP6p, EP6m, EP9p, EP11m, G3p, G3m, G4p, G4m

A full list of the referenced outcomes is provided online: http://intranet.exeter.ac.uk/emps/subjects/engineering/accreditation/

The AHEP document can be viewed in full on the Engineering Council’s website, at http://www.engc.org.uk/
