This module discusses principles governing the conceptual design of buildings and their implementation in engineering practice. In particular, you will know about form and functionality, actions on buildings, structural design of tall buildings, sustainability and passive buildings, construction and demolition, resilience of buildings, operation and performance tracking.
You will have the opportunity to examine case studies among others the exotic shape of the Transamerica Pyramid (San Francisco), the revolutionary cell apartments Unité d'Habitation (France), the unusual plan distribution of luxury apartment block (Berlin), the energy efficient Shard London Bridge, and to discuss and implement principles of conceptual design in practical applications.
To provide you with knowledge of fundamental aspects of conceptual design of buildings and implementation in engineering practice.
Lecturers will cover a number of topics including:
- form and functionality;
- actions on buildings;
- sustainability of buildings;
- construction and operation;
- resilience and maintainability.
This is a constituent module of one or more degree programmes which are accredited by a professional engineering institution under licence from the Engineering Council. The learning outcomes for this module have been mapped to the output standards required for an accredited programme, as listed in the current version of the Engineering Council’s ‘Accreditation of Higher Education Programmes’ document (AHEP-V3).
This module contributes to learning outcomes: SM1m, SM1fl, SM4m, SM2fl, SM6m, SM3fl, EA5m, EA2fl, D3m, D1fl, D7m, D2fl, D8m, D3fl, ET1m, ET1fl, ET2m, ET2fl, ET4m, ET4fl, ET5m, ET5fl, ET6m, ET6fl, EP2m, EP1fl, EP9m, EP2fl, EP10m, EP3fl, EP11m, EP4fl, G1m-G4m, G1fl-G4fl
